If flyers are subjected to even more inconvenience as a direct result, can we accurately call the latest airline terror attack "failed"?

He wasn’t trying to “inconvenience” us. He was trying to blow us the F### up. So yeah, he failed.

He gets a big fat FAIL

I am fairly convinced that the terrorists do not want to blow up any of our planes. If they wanted to, they’d have someone less inept doing those missions. I think that what they really want is to use our own law enforcement agents (TSA) to terrorize us. And I would say that they are pretty successful!

@gtreyger you have a pretty insulting and ignorant definition of the word “terrorize”. Being subjected to extra security is not terrorism. Having to take off your shoes is not terrorism. Having to meet your party at baggage claim instead of the gate is not terrorism. TSA is not “terrorizing” you. Terrorism is acts of violence. It is death, and destruction, and mayham. For you to claim that you’ve been a victim of terrorism at the airport by the TSA is truly a revolting insult to all the lives that have actually been destroyed by terrorism.

proXXi's avatar

No, @MrItty

@gtreyger Isn’t suggesting that the TSA is responsible for terror. Rather the terrorists are using the TSA to terrorize us.

Also, list any Americans that haven’t been affected in some way by the terror attacks and threats.

I’m astonished that no one has blown up a carry-on bag at the security screening station yet. How long do you suppose we’ll be wanting to stand in that line after the first time that happens?

Given that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was on the “Terror watch list” and still managed to get on a plane with a bomb in his underpants – a better question would be “will the new security measures actually make you any safer when flying?”

MrItty's avatar

@proXXi uh-huh. And you just misused the word “terrorize” as well. Read my answer again. It applies to you as well as it applies to @gtreyger

Terrorists using the TSA to terrorize us would mean somehow convincing the TSA to start KILLING us. They’re not. They’re making us take off our shoes and occasionally get a patdown at the airport. Get the difference yet?

@MrItty The purpose of terrorism is to create fear.

I can fear for my life.

I can also fear a long line and the invasion of my privacy at airport security as well.

MrItty's avatar

@proXXi Find a new word. “Terrorism”, regardless of the dictionary definition, now means “to blow shit up”. People have died. People have lost loved ones. For you to use the same word in relation to having to go through airport security is disgraceful.

proXXi's avatar

@MrItty I won’t be looking for a new word.

Individuals that we call terrorists have promised to disrupt our lives. That’s one of the things they’re doing.

Of course people have died. That’s the most regrettable thing terrorists have done sofar.

There’s been plenty of threads about that already.

MrItty's avatar

@proXXi Please take a trip to NYC, to Ground Zero, and then talk to some people who lost loved ones on 9/11. Then come back, flying no doubt, and tell me again that TSA “terrorized” you at the airport.

proXXi's avatar

@MrItty Ground Zero is a few blocks south of my apartment.

gtreyger's avatar

@MrItty What’s disgraceful is that I have to take off my shoes to go through the AP security. What’s disgraceful is having to through out a bottle of water when going through AP security. What’s disgraceful is watching how TSA agents make up their own rules and fondling a 60 year old blue haired lady from Arkansas, while letting a 25 year old arab punk go through, because they are afraid of him filing a racial discrimination complaint. I fly quite often, usually to Iraq and other choice spots. I know about terrorism and being terrorized.

MrItty's avatar

@proXXi then you of all people should know better. I’m thoroughly disgusted. I need to stop following this thread before I get moderated. Bye.

Take Care.

Because the shoe bomber had explosives in his shoes the public now has to remove their shoes when going through TSA security checkpoints.
This guy had explosives in his underware??
Security screeings may very different in the future.

For me it is not a matter as to whether it was a success or failure; it has everything to do with INTENT. I noticed someone wrote that terrorism is only to scare people. Is that why the doc at Ft. Hood shot the soldiers? To scare them?

You can joke about this all you like but you never know what Flutherite lost a relative in the attack of September 12, 1001and has to read this outrageous, insensitive remarks.

gtreyger's avatar

@Flo_Nightengale I challenge you to find one statement in all of the above that states that terrorism is only to scare people! Do not confuse being scared with having your life disrupted. Although, if you are scared, you can bet that your life will be disrupted. That’s exactly what terrorists want to do. Disrupt our lives by making us scared. The doc at Ft. Hood shot up the soldiers because he is nuts! A terrorist doesn’t care about who he kills, he cares about scaring those, who are alive! Scaring them into disrupting their lives. The terrorists have achieved their goal. They may not have taken down a plane, but they did disrupt the lives of millions of people at the TSA checkpoints for years to come!

@gtreyger The purpose of terrorism is to create fear stated by @proXXi

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@csimme01 There will probably be a push to use more of those full-body x-ray scanners. You know, the ones that project an image of your naked body for TSA guys to snicker at.

I’ve been through one of them. I hated it. I felt degraded afterwards.

Thank you @Kelly_Obrien for helping me out.

@Flo_Nightengale Anything for a nurse, ma’am

gtreyger's avatar

@Kelly_Obrien @Flo_Nightengale

One of the purposes of terrorism is to create fear. It is NOT it’s only purpose. Please don’t take statements out of context.

csimme01's avatar

@Dr_Dredd I agree but it is going to take time and money before they are in place everywhere. In the short term my best guess will be a pat down for everyone.

Kelly_Obrien's avatar

@gtreyger The purpose of terrorism is to create fear stated by @proXXi….This is a direct quote. No statement was taken out of context.

gtreyger's avatar

@Flo_Nightengale Just because my opinion differs from yours does not mean that I am trolling. As a matter of fact, I don’t see you saying anything at all to support your point of view! I’d like to hear what you have to say, in your own words.

@Kelly_Obrien I do not disagree with the statement that __the purpose of terrorism is to create fear__. I disagree with the statement that the terrorism’s ONLY purpose is to scare people, as stated by @Flo_Nightengale “I noticed someone wrote that terrorism is only to scare people.” No one wrote that, and I doubt anyone thinks that.

Bottom line, terrorists got what they wanted with this latest attack. They scared the country into getting fondled and terrorized by the TSA officers. Mission accomlished!

@gtreyger no need for me to continue this discussion. The person that originally started it disappeared!
