Asked by Jayy (432points) December 29th, 2009

I don’t really know what to do. I’m not much a party boy but i don’t really want to look back on my 18th in years to come disappointed that i didn’t do anything. What are your suggestions?

I went on active duty in the Navy. Not much of a party, I just went to my first electronics school.

I’m sorry, but 18 isn’t the fun birthday. You get assloads more responsibility (can be tried as an adult, can be drafted, can be called for jury duty, etc), and almost no new priviledges (can buy cigarettes, porn, and lottery tickets. Whoo.) You still can’t drink legally or even rent a car. You can vote. That’s something.

21 is the fun birthday. 18…. I treated it like any other.

I’m not really one for throwing myself my own party, so luckily my friends sort of did it for me. It was still a fairly small affair, but I had fun. We had cake and just hung out at one of my friends house, and one of the fun parts was opening presents. I made my friend add that there was a $7 gift limit on the invitations so everyone had to be creative. The same friend bought me a pirate launcher, it was great.

Just enjoy yourself responsibly. Why not go for a night out with some friends, Depending on your location, you may be old enough to drink but dont over-do it. or take your girlfriend / significant other out for a special meal / pictures / or something totally out there like a bungee jump or parachute jump or something, you’ll definately remember that!

Hmm bungee sounds good.

Well its not like you can drink legally, but you can pregame somewhere. Id say its not as big as 21 (most of my friends drank to black out point at 21 including me). But you do want to enjoy it, id say drink some at a buddies house, round up a few girls you know and hit a local club. Even if its not youre scene im sure the girls wont let you have a bad time.

Have a GIANT party and invite like 45–100 people to it so you will have a lot of PEOPLE !!!!!!!!

On my 18th birthday I went to the park with my sister and we played frisbee.

Do whatever the hell you want to do. You don’t have to do something just for the sake of doing something. I really doubt that if you don’t buy a lottery ticket you’ll look back in twenty years and be disappointed that you didn’t blow a dollar on a particular day.

You could get married like I did but I wouldn’t recommend it. Maybe dinner and a movie.

scotsbloke's avatar

@Silhouette – I’d say at LEAST dinner and a movie before marriage…........:0)

@scotsbloke That’s pretty much what my husband and I did. All’s well that ends well, I suppose. Still wouldn’t recommend it.

@trumi You got it! Listen to Trumi!

@Silhouette I got married shortly after my 18th birthday, it will be 44 years in July 2010. Worked for us.

@Ron_C That is incredible, looks like we both got lucky. I still want my children to live a little before they tie the knot.

scotsbloke's avatar

@Silhouette I got married when I was 18, for all the WRONG reasons and it lasted about 5 minutes.
My second wife, we’ve been together 16 years, married for 10. But I had some years of “putting it out there” so to speak, so I wouldnt NOT recommend marriage as it can be beautiful and @Ron_C – Congrats to you my friend.
Back to the OP’s question: How about creating a video blog or diary of your 18th birthday so you can view it in the future? Might be a fun thing to do, whatever you decide to do for it, take along a video camera – erm, unless you decide to get frisky with your partner of course! :0)

Axemusica's avatar

@scotsbloke o0o0o0o0o I really like that idea. do the video camera thing!!

Ron_C's avatar

@scotsbloke @Silhouette I really like the video idea. Of course I’m glad that they weren’t around when I was 18. I think I would be very embarrassed by the way I was back then. I don’t need the reminder 40 years later. Maybe if you know you are being recorded, you’ll avoid the really embarrassing stuff.
