Drugs at different pharmacy chains: different prices?

Asked by lrk (757points) December 29th, 2009

Do different pharmaceutical chains (Walgreens, CVS, etc.) charge different prices for prescription meds? If so, are any chains reliably cheaper or more expensive (assuming the same region)?

Thanks!

I’ve found the best prices either at Kroger or Walmart depending on the drug.

You bet they do. Sometimes there is as much as a 50% differential depending upon the drug.

I have found Costco Pharmacy to be the cheapest by far, amazingly so. You don’t have to be a member to use the Pharmacy only. By law they must be available to the public.

You can also call several pharmacies to get a price quote and find the cheapest one.

Stay away from Rite Aid. Always the highest.

Pharmaceutical companies were not allowed until recently to advertise prescription drugs. (I think it was a good idea!)
Pharmacies are still not allowed to advertise the price of their prescription drugs, but you can call around and get their prices. Walmart has that great $4.00 program if your medicine qualifies. Costco also has some pretty good prices and you don’t have to be a member to use their pharmacy.

what @Buttonstc said: Costco pharmacy is the cheapest and you don’t have to be a member. a lot of people don’t know that. at the front entrance where you show your membership card, just tell them you’re going to the pharmacy. i think although i’m not sure you don’t have to be a member to use the optical either.

How do you change your Rx from one pharmacy to another?

@Jeruba ; Ask the new pharmacy to do it for you.
