Asked by mass_pike4 (2096points) January 2nd, 2010

I love blue moon. I also enjoy allagash and shock top. Can you give me another good beer that is similar to these and please describe the flavors?

I’m a big fan of Lindemans lambic myself. Those Belgians know beer – that’s for darn sure.

I would have said Stella Artois, but @Zen_Again beat me to it. So, here is a whole list by category.

I really enjoy Hoegaarden White Ale. It is similar to the others you posted, with a nice sweetish, citrus flavor.

@Marina Cheers! I’d take you out for a Stella A any day – but it would cost about 1500 bucks to do that. Maybe one day..

Hoegaarden is fantastic. So is Delirium Tremors (if you’re feeling like getting silly).

If you’re looking for a Belgian-style, my favorite beer of all time is The Reverend by Avery Brewing Co.

Personally I love Leffe. There’s different kinds, the black one, known as Leffe Brune, is my fave.

Chimay
Saison Dupont

Well Blue Moon is brewed by Coors, and Stella is brewed by InBev (I think). Not sure about Hoegarden

There are many MANY styles of Belgians. Some of the most popular are Dubbels, which tend to be brown, dark, heavy, and yeasty. Tripels are higher in alcohol, and blond, spicy, and sour. Lambics are wheat beers and tend to be fruit infused since they’re really sour.

I agree with @PupnTaco on his list. I’m not sure where you live, but North American breweries that make excellent Belgian styles are Allagash, Ommengang, Lost Abbey, and Russian River.

@laureth Try the Lindemann’s lambic Frambois mixed 1:1 with Young’s Double Chocolate Stout.

Ooooooooh, that sounds delish!

I am sorry but I’m going to have to disagree with everyone who is suggesting Stella. It’s about a step above Budweiser and as noted above, is owned by Anheuser-Busch. It’s an alright beer, but I’m just sayin’ – if you’re looking to get a Belgian experience, it’s definitely not the way to go.

Whoever mentioned Leffe and Chimay got it right. Go for a Leffe Blonde or my personal favorite, Chimay Grande Reserve. A little on the pricey side, but SO worth it – a rich, malty, nutty flavor that is very sweet and a little spicy. Highly recommended if you like Allagash. Buy a 750 ml bottle for 15–20 bucks and split it with a friend like a bottle of wine – I think the ABV is about 9%. You will get a buzz.

Seriously though, saying that you like belgian beer and citing stella is like saying that you love steak and citing outback steakhouse.

Yes, I am a tremendous snob.

@peyope I agree. I don’t see the big deal about Stella Artois really. I prefer Grolsch, when it comes to skunky beers. But to each his own I guess.

@peyope Actually, I have to agree with you about the Stella.

Beer isn’t my preferred drink, which is why I like the flavored Belgian beers, like Bellevue Kriek with a taste of cherry, etc.
I also like Witbiers, like Hoegarten.
