Someone got into my account!

Asked by Tink (8673points) January 3rd, 2010 from iPhone

I was leaving a comment on a jellies fluther and I saw a comment that was left from me, but I don’t remember writing it. Only two people that I know have my password, but I doubt it could have been them. What can I do?

Post a disclaimer where the comments you didn’t write appeared!

Change your password. Email an admin if you must.

And then, when you have a new one, DON’T GIVE IT TO ANYONE.

Grisaille's avatar

Change your password.

Other than change my password. Thanks though.

Tink did you sign onto Fluther from another computer somewhere and forget to log out?

Flag the quip you did not write.

Tink's avatar

No, I only fluther from my iPod and I had it with me.

The advice above is solid: and the best procedures you can follow at this stage.

But double check: compare the writing and language style of the comment in question to your own. If they don’t match, then you’ve been hacked.

If you use the same password or user name on other services (e.g. email, facebook, another QnA site), check those too – just in case.

How do we know this isn’t the person who Stole This Account!!??

Tink's avatar

@Spinel The other person had bad punctuation and capitalization. I have OCD so I know it was not my “writing”.

@XOIIO Ahhhh!

@XOIIO We just need to look for an evil mustache and we can figure this out.

I confess, it was me. I left a comment to that person using yours so what I was commenting them on wouldn’t make me sound like a stalker. Sorry I did it without telling you first…

Dog's avatar

Do you have any idea how long ago the comment was written?

Judi's avatar

If you don’t want the comment attributed to you, flag the comment and ask the mods to remove it. You might also look on your own page and see if you have posted any other comments that you didn’t really post.
Could you have forgotten to sign out and someone in your household posted?

@Damn_Tony -What the hell dude?!

Dog's avatar

Tony!!! Sooo uncool!
But thanks for being honest.

Why would you even give anyone your password, unless you were in a situation like rangerr and had to let us know what had happened to you?

avvooooooo's avatar

@Tink1113 Told ya. :)

@Damn_Tony Just send it to me next time, its ok. :)

Tink's avatar

@Jeruba I gave them my password for some changes of my avatar or simple things like that.
@avvooooooo You were right!

Now I need to change my settings.

XOIIO's avatar

Well whoever did this is stupid. If I ever got into somebody’s account I would change their password, and assimalate their account, then wreck their reputation on the site for all eternity, even getting that account banned.

Say, I was just hired by fluther to do account inspections, I need all your passwords so I can make sure everything is in order.

Jeruba's avatar

People can help you with graphics work offline and then just give you a new file to upload.

Spinel's avatar

@Tink1113 Really, that’s odd: giving your password away for avatar services and such? Its contrary to standard practices. That is the sign of a shady designer. I know: I used to make custom avatars for people back in the days of Live QnA.

Tink's avatar

@Spinel I personally do know one of those two people, that’s why I gave it to him. The other one I felt as if I could trust them. It was a mistake though. And yes just for that.

Dog's avatar

I gave my password to Blondsjon so he could give me the avatar I have in honor of Cak. :)

Jeruba's avatar

Ok, naturally that is your business, but I am still baffled by it. When I made an avatar for Augustlan, I uploaded it as mine, and she captured it from there a few minutes later. An image can also be posted to a third-party site such as PhotoBucket or simply e-mailed from one account to another. I can’t see how it could necessitate giving away a password. I would give mine to my husband only if I were seriously ill. If another person never has it, then you never have to worry.

@Jeruba “I uploaded it as mine, and she captured it from there a few minutes later.” Interesting delivery technique. I’ll have to try it sometime. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

iwamoto's avatar

i wouldn’t even give JohnPowell my password even though i gave him my cherry…

jrpowell's avatar

Tink is on a iPod Touch and you can’t change avatars on it. Have the mods check the IP of the comment. It might help clear things up and you should change your password.

And I am not responsible for iwamoto becoming a man.

Grisaille's avatar

John Powell is responsible for iwamoto becoming a man. I was there.

AstroChuck's avatar

@johnpowell- You can change avatars on an iPod/iPhone. I’ve done it. You just can’t add new ones.

Dr_C's avatar

Now if only @johnpowell could make @Grisaille a man… that would be quite the accomplishment!

@All.. back from vacation… let the fun begin!
