Could I be pregnant?

Asked by vendetta (19points) January 7th, 2010

I have taken two pregnancy tests, and both of them have come up negative, but I haven’t had my period. I am two weeks late.
Can you help me?

Yes, you could be. The only sure way to know is to get a blood test or a sonogram. Granted, if you took a few tests over a course of a few weeks, and they were all negative, it’s unlikely that you are pregnant. Better safe than sorry though – go to the doc.

Its probably best to see your doc, but as a man Im no expert in this area.
Maybe some of the womenfolk on here can help you?

There are so many things that can influence a woman’s cycle. You need to see an OB/GYN about this. Nothing on the internet will be able to give you the answers that a doctor can.

Stress can delay your cycle. Have you gone through any severe changes in your life?
Job changes, employment problems, divorce? You also go through several changes in your cycle as you age. Usually after 2 weeks the fetus should be attached to the uterus and you should show up possitive by now. I don’t know how accurate those test can be.

Have you had sex without birth control?

None of here can help you. You need to go to your doctor and find out for sure.

No, you’re probably not.

Are you feeling crampy? Are your breasts enlarged and tender at all? are you sleepy? These are some early signs of pregnancy. I expect that the tests you pick up at the local drug store are not foolproof—the best way to tell is how you feel. And then you can confirm with a Dr. test. It used to be (in the olden days) that a woman wasn’t considered pregnant until she announced it to the world—even if she was obviously pregnant.

You can freak yourself out about being pregnant and start displaying signs, including a missed period, without actually being pregnant.

Calm down, take another test and make sure you’re doing it right (in the morning, the first pee of the day, whatever else might not be just right) and if you’re really concerned then go to the doctor. But please know that there is such a thing as tricking your body into thinking you’re pregnant when you’re not. I know a girl personally who did this for about 3 months.

If you’re a guy, you’re probably not pregnant.

I’m an OB/GYN nurse practitioner, so I deal with this question frequently.

Modern urine pregnancy tests are quite sensitive and accurate if instructions are followed to the letter. The urine test we use here in the office will be positive at 25 mIU, and will pick up most pregnancies by about 2 weeks after conception. Home tests vary – the most sensitive appears to be First Response Early Result, whivh is sensitive to about 7mIU, similar to a serum blood pregnancy test.

Ultrasounds can’t reliably diagnose pregnancy until 3–4 weeks after conception.

If you have not had unprotected intercourse in the last 2–3 weeks, and you’ve had 2 negative pregnancy tests a few days apart that were done correctly, it’s very unlikely that you’re pregnant. If it’s unusual for you to skip a period, probably good to see someone, and if you’re having lower abdominal pain, do it urgently.

@MagsRags as an OB/GYN can you confirm that she’s probably not pregnant if she’s a he?

MagsRags's avatar

@ninjacolin sounds like a safe bet, but why would he be having periods at all?

@MagsRags you’re right, she should go see a doctor about this. you’re really good at this!
