Why noses start running from eating soup?

Asked by rebbel (35549points) January 7th, 2010

I wondered this for years already and never bothered to look for an answer, untill now.
What does soup do, and other hot dishes not, to make my nose run.
They both have steam coming from them, yet only soup does it to me.
Anybody knows the why?

I wouldn’t know. The only food I can think of that makes my nose run is hot wings

The heat (and steam rising from the bowl) loosen your nasal passages. That’s my guess. Kind of like how the steam from a shower clears you out too.

@Allie was pretty close… there is the added effect of heat and moisture in such close proximity to the nose that you don’t get with other drier foods… the heat is also a vaso-dilator… so the blood vessels dilate and more liquid passes through them increasing mucus production.
