Should I get this checked out, or wait to see if it heals on its own?

Asked by flash74686 (478points) January 8th, 2010

Today, I went to the gym, after not working out for about a week. I normally do two sets of squats (12 reps) with 3 lb weights then two sets of 12 lunges, also with weights. Today, I upped the weights to 5 lb, but only did one set for both lunges and squats. I also rode the bike for quite a while.

I was perfectly fine until now, when my right knee locked up. I can stand semi-straight, as long as my knee is slightly bent. Whenever I try to stand my tallest and straighten my knee all the way, it starts to hurt to the point where I can’t stand it. Also, when I sit with my knees bent, there’s a dull pain, but not enough for me to notice if I’m focused on something else. As this has never happened to me before, I wanted to know if I should wait a day or two to see if it works out on its own, or if I should go to the doctor. So, could it be serious?

I encourage that you see a Doctor as soon as possible. It sounds like it could be serious.I would not take any chances for if you have injured yourself- It is best to receive treatment when the problematic area is new.

might have pop’d a bursa sac if it’s swollen. maybe stretched a ligament or have a very slight meniscus tear. I’d give it some time and rest. But if it gets worse or doesn’t improve don’t wait, just go.

buy a knee brace, to stabilize it, but go have dr check it out. For me a brace does the trick, but it doesn’t hurt to get a professional opinion. One of my daycare moms is a nurse for an orthopedic dr, and that’s what they’d suggest.

Maybe rest it and ice it for a day or so but remember to never lock a joint at the end of an exercise whether it’s a squat or bench press. 3 pounds huh? What are you training for ironman? MY GOD PACE YOURSELF!~

Walk it off :)

seriously, I’d wait a day or two, if it’s still bothering you go see a doctor.
Hope everything is okay! Take care!

Try to sleep on your back at night with a pillow under the knee to keep it at that slightly bent angle.

Trying to force it straight when standing or walking just continues to traumatize it.

But you really do need to get it checked by an orthopod to be certain there isn’t permanent damage since this is an internal issue.

@SeventhSense – you are such a smart alec, but I have to admit I was thinking the same thing.

Ice it down, put some ben gay on it, take a couple of advil and see how you feel in a day or so.

I don’t think you should go right away, however you should in any case if it absolutely necessary. Put some ice on it, don’t overwork it, and BE CAREFUL!! I have a ligament in my right knee, where it’s tight so in some movements it slides against my knee cap. It doesn’t hurt, but it gets irritated after a while. My point being here, is that I can stretch out my knee which opens it up so it doesn’t rub/irritate it anymore. What I do when it gets irritated, is I lean to my left (or the opposite side from the hurting knee) and I bend to the side to the point where I can feel my hip stretching and moving outward so that I can feel a long stretch from my knee to my hip along my hamstring area. I don’t know if this will work for you, it’s just a simple and easy stretch, doesn’t take long, and no extra pain or anything. If anything, wait it out just a couple of days, if it affects or gets in the way of any regular activities like climbing the stairs then see a doctor for extra help or an inside look at what’s really going on.

Wait a day or two, don’t do the things that make it hurt, let it rest so if swelling is causing the pain it will have a chance to subside. If it gets much worse then go ahead and go to the doctor right away.

Have it checked out. Knees are probably the biggest design flaw in the human body, no doubt as a result of moving to an upright walking posture. I f*cked up a knee at age 15 and have struggled with it for my entire life.

Ice it. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off to reduce inflamation.
Limit any activities that cause your knee to hurt.
Avoid any non-essential walking.
You may apply heat after 24 hours.
If it does not ease up see a doctor at a sports injury practice if you can.

I’d recommend going straight away. Walking on it really isn’t going to help.
