Where should I be looking in certain times during parallel parking on my road test?

Asked by jamzzy (885points) January 10th, 2010

I know how to drive, but the thing is I’m not sure where the instructor would be wanting me to look when I like back up, or parallel park…

You need to pick a point in the back left/right window. Exactly where really depends on the car you’re driving.

When you parallel park, you line the car up parallel with the car in the front of the spot and look over your shoulder. Turn the wheel and back up until the middle of the passenger door front panel on your car is even with the end of the car in front. Then turn the wheel the other way (all the way) and back into place.

I used to work at a car rentals, and i was an utter noob at parallell parking until my workmates taught me this trick:

Here’s the setup: [car A] [pocket] [car B]

1. Drive up alongside car A, stop so you are exactly aligned with car A (the side mirrors are at the same level).
2. Stop. Get in reverse. Turn your wheel so it’s maxed out to back into the pocket.
3. Turn your head or check your rear view to make sure granny, mom with baby or your cat hasn’t stumbled into your pocket.
4. Start backing up. Look in your left side view mirror.

Here comes the trick: When you see both headlights of car B in your left side mirror, you have the correct angle.

5. As soon as you see both headlights of car B in the left side mirror, stop and straighten out the wheel. From here on you can look in your rear view mirror or turn your head and look back between the passenger seats.
6. Back up into the pocket, and straighten out as needed, the rest is easy as you will have the right angle into the pocket.

After learning this trick, i’ve never had any problems parallell parking.

Also i prefer looking back between the seats over using the rear view, as judging distances in the mirror can be tricky.

@nisse, that’s great advice. I’ve never tried that technique before, but I have no doubt it’‘ll work great. I can’t wait to try it.

God, I need a life.

Here is a simple answer/solution: to parallet park…......

Two mirrors to constantly watch…drivers side mirror and rearview mirror.

I use a combination of all of these but identify with @john65pennington most, Adjust the right side mirror so you can see the side of your car as well as the curb. there are these Convex Mirror’s you can get and stick on yours on the outside corner. they take out the blinds spot and help you see everything so you can teach yourself to turn and keep from hitting the curb, you usually dont have to turn the steering all the way to the lock but just most- it just depends on the car your driving.
