What can you buy from a pharmacy that closes cuts?

Asked by disturbed_broken (756points) January 10th, 2010 from iPhone

I got a really big cut that possibly needs stitches, every time I move my arm it bleeds and instead of going to the
hospital and getting stitches. I was wondering if there was anything to hold the cut closed I could buy at a pharmacy?

Needle and thread.

Why don’t you want to go to the hospital?

steri strips. Some people use super glue, but it may not be the most sterile. There is a surgical super glue but I doubt you can buy it over the counter. If you’re a “REAL MAN” you will just use duct tape.

You can’t close these kind of cuts instantly… But you can buy gauze (the white thing doctors use), and tightly wrap it around your wound. Then seal it with medical tape. It’s not expensive.

How many days has the cut been like that?

Butterfly bandages should hold it closed.

I could fit a pin in it and hold it closed and the pin would disapear and I wouldn’t be able to see it. Not that I would do that.
@JessicaisinLove
okay thanks

Gauze and tape’s the way to go, and the above comment about butterfly closures can only help. If the bleeding’s excessive, you might try a clotting agent. Be sure to air, clean, and disinfect the area regularly.
You may want to wrap the whole business with an ACE bandage. Try not to disturb the cut.

Why do you want to avoid getting proper medical care?

disturbed_broken's avatar

Because I’m scared of docters, and guys. Terrified actually….I have alot of problems just going to school…I have bad bad anxiety toward men and most men are docters….so I really want to avoid it. I know this may seem stupid to some of you and I hate this fear but I’m scared…..

There are nearly as many female doctors as male doctors in emergency departments. You don’t what to get a bad infection and you probably don’t want to have a scar. When you go, explain that you are shy and would be much more comfortable with a female to help you.

Super glue works wonders on smaller cuts. Any bartender worth his or her salt knows this.

If the cut is deep and the blade was metal, you need to make sure your tetanus shots are up-to-date. The cut may harbor bacteria and if not, is certainly a tempting breeding ground. It needs to be cleaned professionally.
