Why do you buy iPhones people?

Asked by Sebulba (892points) January 11th, 2010

Every time i check my account here on Fluther i see at least one “question for me” that refers to an iPhone or iPod problem. This could mean two things. Either the Apple products are shit or all the Fluther users own one. So tell me why have you bought that thing? Apple claims on its website that Apple products “just work” and they highlight this phrase as a reason to buy one.
So owners of an iPhone let me ask you some things.
You paid so much money to buy a thing that doesn’t even have a radio! Its battery is gone in 5 hours of talking. The camera is 3 Mpix and the screen resolution is 480×320. The memory is LIMITED to 32 GB. Great phone! Like maddox says you buy it cause you thing you play in an Apple commercial. I won’t talk about the kick-ass Nokia N900 that brings mobile phones in another level and makes iPhone look like 10 years old. I will ask you why haven’t you bought the Nokia 5800 xpessmusic that costs half of the iPhone price and it has all the iPhone goodies like touch screen (actually better than the iPhone’s),colour depth of 16million , GPS, flight mode, mp3 playing, e-mail, video recording, WiFi plus it is better than the iPhone in screen resolution which is 640×360, plus it has a radio player, plus you can use micro SD cards for memory so you can have as much as you want, plus the camera is 3.2 Megapixels, plus the battery lasts for 8.8 hours of talking, plus you can do video-calls. Are you a victim of advertising? Why pay 300$ more to have something that sucks completely? And if you have the money and want to spend it anyway why haven’t you considered the best phone every made Nokia N900? Which is actually again 100$ cheaper than the iPhone.Just tell me a reason to buy an iPhone

not me, i dont even own a mobile. ill buy one when they can do all the things a star trek tricorder can do, or when they just make and receive calls.

@eponymoushipster you learn something every day.

EDIT: this actually helps my mind a lot, i had always wondered how something could be a ‘triple quarter’

I’m a Droid guy as well. I have a G1 and it works fine for me. The only problem with all of these smartphones is that they all need flash to watch stuff other than youtube. So I’ll get the next phone that is flash capable.

What are these “iPhones people” of which you speak?

a reason to buy iPhone? I own Apple stocks . . . so please, everyone out there, believe in the hype and the glory being advertised for all Apple products…

1. Any radio worth listening to can be streamed on my iPhone. Also, having all my music, etc with me frequently negates this need.

2. Yes, the Nokia products you mention have some better features, but did they exist prior to the iPhone? Tell me, what smartphone or other phone provided decent integration with Mac-based software? What other smartphone prior to the iPhone gave you non-crappy navigation? I personally am not wowed by most apps, but what other phone even today delivers on apps like the iPhone does?

Good for you that you found something you like. Sorry you can’t just enjoy that.

I really liked my iPhone. I bought it for the reason that it is awesome I was a first Gen user. It changed the phone market. I did recently drop att and went to Verizon. The Droid is good to. But best believe when the iPhone comes to big red ill be getting it. Its a better interface. Better market. Most sensitive touchscreen with multi-touch out of the box. It also has a better hardware design. The Google nexus one did make android phones less ugly though.

Because they’re awesomely outrageous.

I got one because 1) I wanted a touch-screen phone, 2) I wanted one that’s also an mp3 player, 3) I’m a Mac user, 4) it’s cool and does everything I want it to do and I don’t need it to do any more than that.

There’s no reason not to get it in my book.

But most of all, unlike owners of other phones, I don’t go around telling people how much their phones suck. :)

I had never fallen in love with a machine in my life before I got my iPhone a month ago. It’s just dandy! Now where do you go to buy iPhone people? I’m sure they’re great too.

Who would want to walk around with a brick in their pocket? The N900 is 25% heavier than the iPhone and the iPhone 3Gs is already pretty lanky. Like career-oriented people would actually buy the N900 over the iPhone just to take advantage of the bigger screen. PS iPhone 3Gs = excellent battery. Were you ever in possession of an iPhone before or are you just basing yourself on what other people have posted about the iPhone in the forums ?

Sebulba's avatar

@rMacker83 i’ll answer to your question saying that i didn’t even compared the N900 with the iphone. i compared the 5800 xpressmusic which is not a brick and actually as you can read on my details is better on everything. Now for the battery i just use the numbers that Apple gives no forums at all. The iPhone’s battery lasts 5 hours talking while 5800’s battery 8.8 hours talking

@Sebulba one thing that the iphone has that might help you is a spell checker.

I respect your preferences and and hope you’ll respect mine. I’ve owned many mobile devices and have found they all have pros and cons. I currently have two mobiles—my personal iPhone 3G-S, and a new BlackBerry Bold my company gave me. I rarely use the BB because of how much easier it is for me to navigate than the BB, plus it’s just more fun. And by the way, the iPhone has no more or less issues than any other mobile device. Occasional technical problems are just the nature of electronics, though I have to say I’ve had no problems whatsoever with iPhone.

I think ” DominicX ” says it perfectly. I feel that way about every Mac product I have purchased since 1984…yeah, that is right – Mac from the beginning, baby! And pretty glad about my stock APPL stock purchases years ago when they were $24/share!

They are just a great company that cares about their products – and what their products look like in peoples hands, on their desks and in their laps. Having a strong design esthetic, I say go Apple to that!

I am like DominicX, I don’t point out other peoples choices – I just make sure I am happy with mine, and I am.

Have a fantastic week people – whether you are a Mac or a PC!

The 5800 has got a lot on the iPhone. From a person’s perspective who lives in Canada, to answer your question, the 5800 only became available recently and, at the time, it was either the iPhone 3Gs or a Blackberry. I still would have gone with the former even had the 5800 been available at the time just because the iPhone 3Gs is easy to use and does not make you feel stupid. Plus I am familiar with OS X and so going with the iPhone was a natural flow. If you are one to video conference from your cell phone than the 5800 would be an obvious choice, but for what I use it for, she has performed admirably (i.e. music).

I got a cell phone! I even make phone calls on it, and I send texts. I also use the calendar and the calculator. That’s all I need.
