How do you get motivated?

Asked by Spinel (3220points) January 11th, 2010

Whether it’s work or a hobby, how to get yourself revved up and ready for the task ahead? What is the shove that pushes you into beginning a project or goal? What’s your motivation?

I like to tell myself that I work best under pressure, but I’m also pretty sure that this is just a way to paint my procrastination in a good light.

My brain is the beginning point. i sit and think of what i have to do and how to approach and compete the job. bank robbers also think this way. since i am not a bank robber, i will continue. once i have a plan, i find my cd of Old Time Rock and Roll and turn it up load. i get into the beat, the beat goes to my feet and i am off and running.

Read a passage that encourages your soul. Listen to your favorite music or song. Get a breath of fresh air outside. I love putting the music up and dancing and singing to it while I clean the house!

There are two ways: sometimes it just happens. If I’ve been lazy for awhile, it seems like one day I just get tired of being lazy so I just start doing stuff. Or….I need and event to give me incentive to be motivated I.e. my second class petty officer exam that is coming up, I then have a reason to study more frequently.

To be honest, I only ever get motivated over something that excites me. I can never get motivated over something boring. So maybe find something that really interests you and then you wont have to worry about motivating yourself.

I’m still working on this so forgive my lack of eloquence but I believe awareness makes you act: Fully understanding how the next 10 seconds of your life is to be spent will require (cause, motivates) you to spend it that way. When there are no questions left about what needs to be done or why, you will find yourself in a moment of action.

Believing that a thing needs to be done right now equals doing that thing.
Merely believing that it would hypothetically be nice to do is not the same as this.
If you believe something must be done, you will be doing it or working towards it, right this second. To be unmotivated is to be without knowledge of how to act and hence without belief that you should.

Sometimes, all it takes is for me to get the right songs going on the iPod and then I’m off and running and motivated to do all different kinds of things.

At other times, I digress a little and procrastinate and here’s the top 10 reasons why:

Through my entire career—newspaper, magazine, ad agency, corporate marketing—I’ve worked under deadlines. After all these years, I wouldn’t know how to work any other way. Make deadlines, good. Miss deadlines, bad. It’s a simple formula, and it’s always worked well for me. Plus… I’ve usually always liked my work.

Sometimes i’m reading some motivated books. And do some exercises.

Break the task you need to do into manageable pieces. It is so much easier to say, “I can do that now!” to a small subtask than the whole main task!
