Good nice-looking logo for my website/blog..?

Asked by archaeopteryx (1004points) January 12th, 2010

Hi all.
This is my new Plone-powered blog, it’s the very first website I have ever built and successfully hosted on the web. And I’m still working on improving and enhancing it.

Though one thing that I’ve failed to do is design a nice cool-looking logo for it. The website is humorously called “My Tomato Soup”, so I’m trying to design a logo that contains a cartoony bowl of tomato soup along with the sentence “My Tomato Soup” next to it.

When it comes to drawing or design, I really really.. suck.
So, I’m looking for some tips as to how do I make such a simple design possible. So, can you help me, please?

well, it depends what software you have to work with and what skills you have. it also depends what you can do on this site, is it totally coded by you? or are you using something that wont allow flash or other certain things to be put on the site?

tell you what, im in quite a good generous mood at the moment, i make sites day in and day out for a living. if you are interested i could always put together a nice cool logo for you, i could do it in flash with a nice animated steaming bowl of soup and everything, or just a jpeg, whatever you like. free of charge for a fellow jelly. let me know if you are interested.

alternatively, if you want to do it your self, and you have a low budget or no budget at all, i would say download ’‘the gimp’’ its free, a program kind of like photoshop, eat up some gimp tutorials on youtube and have at it.

@poisonedantidote
That is very kind of you my friend. :-)
My website is built with Plone, a Python-written Zope -based CMS.
If I’m not bothering you, I could use a simple .jpeg design, please.
And don’t worry, I will make sure to attribute it to you in the footer, I promise.

And about the GIMP, I’m a Linux user, and yeah I use the Gimp all the time.
I also use Inkscape sometimes.

Thank you very much.

@archaeopteryx no problem, no need to credit me either. i enjoy doing this kind of stuff. what dimensions do you have to work with? looking by eye it seems about 80px x 320px

anyway, ill get cooking it wont take me that long.

EDIT: oh yea, any particular choice of font?

archaeopteryx's avatar

@poisonedantidote
The dimensions are 252px x 57px.

And, any simple, but intuitive font would be more than great.
Though a China town-style font would be best.

Thanks very much in advance.

EDIT: And I would still like to credit you, nonetheless, it would make me feel better. :-)

@archaeopteryx kk, ill come back and link to it in a little. 15 to 30 minutes or so i’d guess.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

I’d suggest one of these. With permission from the owner, of course.

poisonedantidote's avatar

ok, just putting the finishing touches in the bowl. a couple little questions regarding preference.

- ’‘my tomato soup’’ would you like any of the ’‘o’s’’ to be tomatoes?

- how hot and steamy do you want the soup? keep in mind your site has a white background and both the bowl and steam need to be a pale shade of gray to show up.

archaeopteryx's avatar

@CyanoticWasp
Thanks, I’ll check them out. :-)

> - ’‘my tomato soup’’ would you like any of the ’‘o’s’’ to be tomatoes?
Umm, would it look nice if both were tomatoes?

> - how hot and steamy do you want the soup? keep in mind your site has a white background and both the bowl and steam need to be a pale shade of gray to show up.

Let’s say as if the soup has just been served a moment ago..?

I’m following this question just because I’m really interested in how the logo will turn out!

poisonedantidote's avatar

@archaeopteryx personally i would not make any of the ‘o’s’ tomatos because you have 3 instances of ‘o’ . its really more something you do with just 1 letter.

as for the steam, ill see what looks good then. just looking for a nice free china town kind of font now. the ones i have are not the best.

archaeopteryx's avatar

@poisonedantidote
Could something like this work?

> personally i would not make any of the ‘o’s’ tomatos because you have 3 instances of ‘o’ . its really more something you do with just 1 letter.

Yeah, I guess you’re right, let’s keep them normal then.

Thanks again.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@archaeopteryx lets see, ill give that font a try now.

i would advise against steam btw, at least the first way i have tried it does not look good.

i used a pale gray and gave it a blur, like real steam, but it just makes it look dirty. maybe it would be better to try with just some raw 100% cartoon looking black lines, kind of like a no smoking sign.

anyway… i dont expect to get it perfect first time round. but ill have the first take on it in a couple of minutes.

@poisonedantidote
Thanks very much for your efforts. :-)

Get in touch with one of our very own: http://www.fluther.com/users/RocketSquid/

He designed his own avatar.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@archaeopteryx ok, here are the first attempts… they still need a little something something before they can be called finished, just uploading for sake of discussion. here we are:

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/5084/logotomato1.jpg

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/8100/logotomato2.jpg

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5137/logotomato3.jpg <—my fave so far

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/4436/logotomato4.jpg

ps, are you sure on the sizes? 252px x 57px. (looks a little smaller)

the blur is being caused at the moment from 2 things i think. 1, i put a little too much detail in on the bowl, 2, the size is so small, hence are you sure on the size.

a 5th: http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6310/logotomato5.jpg

archaeopteryx's avatar

@poisonedantidote
Yes, it’s 252px x 57px, as I said before.

And, I agree, the third one seems much simpler than the rest.
The other are kinda like “soaked” in shadows, especially the first one.
So, yeah the third attempt looks best so far.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@archaeopteryx aye, i messed up on the first ones, made them big and then shrunk them down and the shadow kind of decided to take over.

you got any ideas what you think would improve it?

im just giving the 3rd and 5th ones a little tweek now.

archaeopteryx's avatar

@poisonedantidote
Perhaps, in the third design, if you make the font slightly bigger, and the color slightly dimmer/darker, I think it should look much better.

eeveegurl's avatar

It’s cute! How about a cutesy font to go with it? Feel free to throw out the idea..

poisonedantidote's avatar

@archaeopteryx here is one kind of like that… see im running out of space to make things much bigger.

… so, i have reduced the size of the bowl in this one to try and buy some space, and i enlarged the font a little, and gave it a darker edge.

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/2092/logotomato6s.jpg

@eeveegurl yea, i think that font is much nicer for sure. – also goes well with the black edges on the bowl.

plus, keeping the black edges on the bowl would make it more simple to add in some steam.

eeveegurl's avatar

I’m an amateur font geek! Just found it yesterday here and it’s free, too!

poisonedantidote's avatar

here is another variation on @eeveegurl ‘s idea.

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/2889/logotomato7.jpg

but i still like @eeveegurl ‘s chunky ubuntu font more.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@eeveegurl did you also make the bowl a touch brighter?

archaeopteryx's avatar

@poisonedantidote
What’s the font you used in your version of @eeveegurl‘s design?

poisonedantidote's avatar

@archaeopteryx here is another version, with the same font as @eeveegurl used. but made larger and bunched up more so it looks a tiny bit more like the evolution one i used.

EDIT: lol, helps when i give a link i guess: http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/489/logotomato8.jpg

eeveegurl's avatar

Yup. Check http://phenomenalanomaly.com/imgs/mts.png again.

Used the one without the black border, brightened it up a touch, and added a bit of drop shadow.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@eeveegurl i like the bowl more now, more photographic looking. what software you using on that? photoshop?

eeveegurl's avatar

Yessirree! Photoshop! It’s fun experimenting! Though I must say, I should probably get to bed soon. Close to 5 in the morning already. Woops!

archaeopteryx's avatar

@poisonedantidote yeah, I agree, it looks more realistic now.

eeveegurl's avatar

:)

any quick changes you’d like before I go to bed?

poisonedantidote's avatar

@eeveegurl its cool thanks, i can always cut things and mix. im just giving it a little twist to produce a couple more versions.

poisonedantidote's avatar

ok… here is one that is kind of a blend of all the ideas… it has the lines off, the blow brighter, @eeveegurl ‘s font, and general shadows on all of it.

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/336/logotomatoideablend.jpg

its getting there for sure now.

EDIT: and i gave the font a little bevel.

EDIT2:

here is a slightly more refined take on the idea.

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6943/logotomatoideablend2.png

CyanoticWasp's avatar

You’re going to want to change it to vegetable soup in a week or so, anyway.

archaeopteryx's avatar

@CyanoticWasp
Yeah, that’s possible. :P

@poisonedantidote
Yup! That’s a good final version.
Thanks very much, man. :-)

And thanks very much to @eeveegurl as well.
Thanks a lot for your time guys! ^_^

archaeopteryx's avatar

What’s a good name/nickname I can use to credit the design to you.
Same to @eeveegurl, since she also participated in it.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@archaeopteryx no problemo. any time. anyway…

here is a large version you can scale down if needed:
