Do you suppose that you would be the same person if you were born under different circumstances?

Asked by Nullo (22009points) January 13th, 2010

For instance, if you were born prematurely or (if you’re already a preemie) if you had been born on time.
I’m talking about substantial differences (or lack thereof) here.

Definitely not.

I am the sum of my experiences.

I don’t know, I don’t think so. Not in terms of that. I believe I was born a little earlier than what was expected. I don’t know if it had anything to do with me being small my whole life and absolutely tiny when I was younger. I’ve always wondered about that…to be honest, I think that just came from my parents. :)

I’d probably be different if I hadn’t been born into a wealthy family. I hate to say that has had such a strong effect on me, but I bet it has.

Absolutely not. One of the many reasons I have no regrets. Though my early life was harsh, it has had a huge impact on who I am today… a person I like pretty well! :)

Paris Hilton would be working at Burger King if she had my parents.

I’ll bet she would be fired.

I do think I would be different, most definitely… we can never underestimate the impact of the flutter of a butterfly’s wings…

Birth can be a very traumatic experience for the baby and the mother. I think it goes without saying that during birth it is quite common for umbilical cords to wrap around the babies neck restricting oxygen to the baby and babies being affected by that lack of oxygen which could cause brain damage. So yes the birth process itself could affect your persona from that angle. That aside once that cord is cut, IMHO it is your upbringing that molds your personality.

I don’t think that birth circumstances make that much difference in who or what you are. Much more important are where you born and how you are perented.

I’d probably be somewhat different. But without a significant starting difference, I don’t think I’d be something outrageously out of the norm.

Studies that look at identical twins who were raised separately show surprising similarities. So genetics probably plays a stronger role than we might think. Even so, I can see how my upbringing affected me in many ways.

Everyone is more than what they were at birth. they are a result of their home, family, school, and work environments.
I realize my blessings.

I doubt it, unless there was brain damage of course. Hmmm…...

Definitely not. Is something ever the same if everything about it is different?
