Will you share your favorite Chex mix recipes?

Asked by wildpotato (15224points) January 15th, 2010

I want to get into making my own Chex mix, and I thought Fluther might have some good suggestions. Of course, all mixes are welcome – but you can be my super best friend if you give me a good spicy hot recipe.

I thought I saw chem mix, and was about to provide a smartass response about sodium and water. Thankfully I stopped myself.

I think my mom always used the recipe on the box, but I think she might have put in a little extra worchestershire sauce. I always liked the bits that were dark and gooey with sauce and spices. Pretty sure you can just add some Tabasco to heat it up a bit. My mom tried a hot and spicy version once, but we didn’t like it.

Here is one I modified to my liking which is super spicy hot!

½ c. butter
1½ tsp. salt
1 TBs Hot wings garlic sauce
1 tsp. Louisiana Hot sauce
4½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 c. Rice Chex cereal
2 c. Bran Chex cereal
1 c. salted nuts
2 c. Wheat Chex cereal
1 c raisins
1 c M&M’s (gotta have the M&M’s) stir in with raisins after baking DUH!

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Heat butter in large shallow roasting pan in oven until melted. Remove, stir in seasonings. Add Chex and nuts. Mix until all pieces are coated. Heat in oven 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on absorbent paper to cool. More salt to taste!!

Nothing better than Muddy Buddies. Of course, they are sweet instead of hot and spicy, and I don’t dare make them because I’ll eat them all. I’ve had such a hankering for Muddy Buddies lately. :(

@MissAusten I second that! I’m making muddy buddies with my after school kids today! (we call it puppy chow)

We always called it puppy chow too! I have a feeling I am going to break down and buy the ingredients for it next time I am at the store. I’ll just have to hit the gym a few extra times!
