River, Lake, Ocean?

Asked by Irishmar (475points) January 17th, 2010

What type of body of water do you like to spend time on and why? I love the St. Croix River, so scenic and clean. Just beautiful. I was a lake girl, but I converted. How about you?

I don’t like to spend time at bodies of water at all

I love the surf and the smell of the ocean. I love lakes. They bring back wonderful childhood memories, but rivers captivate me. The narrower and faster and rockier the riverbed, the better.

I love the sound of water moving so it would have to be river or ocean. I’ve never lived by the ocean si I think I would love to give that a try. If I had a million dollars..

I like them all. I live pretty close to the ocean, so going to the beach is nothing foreign to me. I’ve been many times and I love going each time I go. It’s beautiful, I love the warmth (I’m not talking Ocean Beach in SF…bleh…), and even though I’m not a big surfer or anything, it was fun the few times I’ve tried it. Part of the reason San Diego is one of my favorite places in the world.

It’s always a competition as to which place I like visiting more, Carmel or Lake Tahoe (my family has houses in both places and so we visit them frequently and I love going to both places). However, I can say that I’ve essentially decided that Lake Tahoe is the closest thing there is to a perfect place on Earth, so even though I love Carmel and Laguna Beach and San Diego, the lake is #1. But it’s really close. Really close. :)

I just savor the pine forests, the boats, the mountain biking, it’s all excellent.

As for rivers, I thoroughly enjoy rafting and inner-tubing down them. :)

California is a great place to live because it has plenty of all three!

I have lived near oceans most of my life. I love the smell of the ocean, the sound of it, the creatures that live in it, and just about everything about oceans and messing about in boats.

@faye – You don’t need a million dollars to live near the ocean in South Texas.

Any, but the ocean most of all. I grew up in an extremely ordinary middle-class Massachusetts neighborhood where I could see the Atlantic from my front door. I now live a few minutes’ drive from the southernmost extent of the San Francisco Bay and three-quarters of an hour from the beach at Santa Cruz. I would never want to be far out of reach of the ocean, some ocean, any ocean, but I do get homesick for the chilly gray seacoast of the Northeast.

I like rivers and lakes.
We don’t have any clean lakes though around here.
And I have never seen an ocean in real life before.
I really like the river we have here though.

@Darwin Just as you don’t know about Canadian winters, I worry about spiders. I’d have to say I have a little phobia. And I am just assuming there are lots of spiders in southern Texas- no research though. I’ve heard Texas has a bit of all the weather?

All of the above. I love and miss the beaches of Costa Rica. My dog Shelby and I walk (and she often swims) along the American River here in Northern California.

I prefer the bathtub.

@faye – Texas is a big place. Down where we are we get snow every ten to twenty years, but the summers are as hot or hotter as any in Dinosaur Provincial Park. We get rain, and wind, and heat waves, and random bits of hail. We do not have blizzards.

And unless you like to live under houses or under decks or under rocks, you won’t see the spiders.

I don’t live near an ocean, and don’t own a boat or have friends with boats, to spend time on the lakes near us. The river has too much barge traffic for recreational activity.

I love them all :)

I’m drawn to rivers. Many of them are like old friends to me. I can sit here and conjure up detailed images of the Firehole, Madison, and Yellowstone in Wyoming; the Strawberry and Weber in Utah, the Guadalupe and Rio Grande in Texas, the Seine in France. I’ve spent some of the richest days of my life losing myself in their spell. Even much of my dream life is spent on rivers.

@Darwin All right then, sounds like something to explore or holiday at.

@faye – PM me if you ever decide to come this way. I can make recommendations.
