Why do chihuahuas shake?

Asked by lizzyluckbox (250points) January 18th, 2010

my little guy shakes..for no apparent reason. i feel like he’s just trying to get attention. like a temper tantrum or something. as if he wants you to feel bad for him and give him more treats.

You have to switch him off. You may have to replace the batteries.

He is just high energy and nervous.

Because ‘survival of the fittest’ and evolution is not on their side.

Doesn’t it mean something, really? That it’s scared?

They are half demon and Earth is a very, very cold place for them. If you were to walk him in the winter outside he may just shake like the people from Jacobs Ladder.

I read somewhere (sorry can’t provide citation) that it can have something to do with blood sugar. Seeing as they have such a high metabolism.

@faye ..he’ll just start doing it out of nowhere…when we’re here at home…its warm…he has food, water…no yelling. when he gets scared he usually yelps and then jumps up in my arms.

very funny judo.

No…he’s fine!! Those little guys just…do that. My son’s dog did it.

It might because of cold temperature or from ever changing living condition that may cause him to stress.(This particular breed is actually pretty sensitive and weak against its surrounding).

He is sad because he wishes he was back in the wild with his family.

@ChazMaz I’m sure he would enjoy his ten minutes in the wild before something like a house cat showed him what-for.

Every one in a while, he realizes that there’s furniture that’s more dangerous than he is.

My dad used to work chihuahua rescue and ended up with six of the little guys of his own. He only has one that shakes regularly, and we attribute that to hypoglycemia (she was bred as a “toy” chihuahua which leads to health problems), so she’s on a special diet to keep her blood sugar as level as possible.

The rest of them will shake if it’s cold out and (heaven forbid) they have to go outside to do their “business.” That’s when we humiliate them by putting them in cute little doggie sweaters :)

There can be a variety of reasons. Bad breeding, chilliness, hypoglycemia. I have a chihuahua (he was a rescue, not bred for me) and he doesn’t shake. The ones that I have seen that do shake, are “teacup” breeds (bred to be smaller), which is, in my opinion, not healthy for the dogs at all.

@richardhenry Is your dog fearlessly stupid? My son’s dog, Midas (I always see “Mightus” in my head when I say his name!) was living with us for a while. We were on the back deck and a freaking HUGE Mastiff running loose showed up. Midas just tore into that dog! It’s a good thing Mastiffs are even tempered. He just walked away, but when Midas bit his heel as he was walking away, he just turned around and looked at this ratty little runt, with a stern warning in his eyes! I was FREAKING out!! That mastiffs head was bigger than the whole little Midas! One bite!

once again ..i appreciate the humor. :) and thank you for the legit answers. johnny (my chi chi) or as we sometimes call him “big john”...he’s not a teacup…and thankfully he doesnt shake allll the time. just random times that dont make sense to me. @val…johnny’s bestfriend that he grew up with is a blue pitbull…and thankfully the pit is so well tempered…we’ve brought him up with alot of love and training. anyway…johnny is the alpha! lol…he’ll just hang off blu’s face…and blu just lets him.“blu” the pit will intentially agravate johnny to get johnny to chase him. its hilarious. but i keep a close watch because i know blu could snap him if he wanted.
