US accused by france of 'occupying' Haiti as troops flood in... Are they serious?

I’ll admit… I love france! I spend a few weeks every year in eze at a friends house. But face it, they lost their minds.

they’re french. they’re outrageous!
maybe they were all planning on hiding out in Haiti next time they planned on surrendering to another country….and now that’s ruined.
It wasn’t “France” it was one International Co-operation Minister running his mouth. Sarkozy has already spoken out against it.

I think they raise a serious point that will become more and more of an issue. Obviously the Haitian government has completely collapsed (physically and authority-wise). But the US is going to have to be very careful to avoid becoming the sole authority. I’m certainly not smart enough to know where to draw the line, but I think it will be very easy for us to essentially establish a new Haitian state as another US client.
Well one thing is good for Haiti I guess. They don’t have anything that the USA needs and logistcaly it is to far from the Middle East for them to really care about so once they are fed and housed I’d imagine the troops will leave. I am sre they will try and hand out some Democracy for the Haitians. America, we just give and give and give.
One thing know… the Haitian population in NYC is relatively successful. There are many Haitian doctors and other professionals, there are many Haitian homeowners and so forth. Statistically, they are doing much better than the american born black people.
Haiti has 50% illiteracy, and over 80% of college graduates from Haiti have emigrated, mostly to the United States.

Did Alain Joyandet really speak for the French government? I’d say there’s a pissed French pilot who wasn’t allowed to land.
The Haitians are saying they want more US troops there, and longer than the last time they were there.
We have a total of 11,500 there at the moment (including those that are involved with the UN peacekeeping mission). And there are already widespread complaints of poor security.
Funny discussion, considering that France tried to put down the slave rebellion of Saint Domingue (previous name for Haiti), never paid the war indemnity due to Haiti, and the US also occupied Haiti from 1915–1934.
