Why do all designer shoes for men look girly?

Asked by mowens (8403points) January 20th, 2010

I’m gay. But, I am the worst gay ever, in that I don’t care what clothes I wear, I didn’t know what a duvet cover was until recently… and I am perfectly content wearing jeans and a blank t shirt every day… so long as it is comfortable.

I was looking at the expensive, “in style” dress shoes. To me, they all look entirely way to… girly. I wouldn’t be caught dead in them. More over, there is no way in hell I would spend $300—$900 on them. I suppose my question is, are there manly, in style shoes? I’m looking at all of these ones that come to a point… and to me that just screams “I’m a little women who likes women’s shoes.”

Not there is anything wrong with that. :)

Because “manly” men couldn’t care less about what shoes are “in style”. Shoes are functional, not a fashion statement.

You’re the worst gay ever? Seriously? Live your life, wear whatever shoes you want, shoes are just shoes – don’t gender inanimate objects and be happy.

I like a good/good looking shoe myself. Something simple, with clean lines.

I so hate tassels and frills on mens shoes.

@ChazMaz I hate tassles and frills on any shoes – this might make me the best lesbian ever…except I’m not one.

They do look girly, don’t they?Maybe you could find something on the internet or ask someone at a shoe repair place. They might know where a more traditional men’s shoe store is.

Heh, I just want nice dress shoes! I didn’t think that it would take me an hour online to buy shoes haha

So- I’m confused about your question.

Are you asking for help finding shoes you like or did you just need a good vent? Both is fine by me- just want to know if I should go to the trouble of helping you find shoes or not.

Just re-read this answer and it sounds bitchy for some reason. Swear I’m not peeved or anything. May need a nap though.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – “this might make me the best lesbian ever”

Na, you are just a no nonsense woman that knows what she likes. :-)

Go to Zappos.com they have every shoe imaginable…you can shop every style on line and then go to a brick and mortar store to try them on but they are an amazing E-store with a very honest and liberal return policy and stand behind everything they sell. Here is a link for you.

Girly? Are they pink and high-heeled?

I know that I’m a dinosaur, but what man needs more than one pair of black and one pair of brown dress shoes? Buy conservative and high quality, they’ll last a lifetime.

there are lots of good dress shoes that don’t look like ‘girly’ shoes- and I know what you mean- my husband wears dress shoes with lug soles (bostonian, florshiem) that look good. I think your’e looking at italian shoes which are more streamlined and pointy.

mowens's avatar

@gemiwing a little of both I guess. I’m upset that I can’t find shoes I like, and I am actually laughing at myself for taking so long… but most of this stuff is absolutely ridiculous. Who wears this stuff? :)

If you have suggestions, I’d take those as well. I used to have I nice pair of loafers, they looked dressy, and were comfortable. They are 10 years old though.

@stranger_in_a_strange_land Where would you buy them? That is exactly what I am looking for…. with no point.

Because they’re designer shoes for men.

Is it not because most of the designers of expensive shoes are gay? :)

The stereotypes in this thread are sickening.

Let me say that I am into shoes and always have been. What is ‘girly’ to one guy is ‘elegant’ or ‘classy’ to another. Why is it that we have so much trouble with what another wears?
Shoes with lug soles are not traditionally dress shoes. Lug soles are for hiking boots and work boots. Many shoe manufacturers make them but they are not worn with a suit and tie (should you ever decide to wear one). Trad men’s dress shoes are wingtip, captoe, or plain toe. Loafers, both penny style and tassel are also considered traditional men’s footwear.
I realize that many men could care less about what shoes they are wearing but they do make an impression. When I was a kid my mother and father always said people look at your face and your shoes. If your shoes are not polished and proper for the occasion you’ve made a bad impression. Although it sounds as if I would only wear black or brown shoes, that is not a correct impression.
Yes I still like wingtips and captoe oxfords but I want them as spectators (two tones) of every combination with white. That’s one of the reasons a significant number of men have worn golf shoes as dress and casual footwear off the course. Now you can even buy golf shoes with street soles or replace the cleats with street caps.

Anything worth buying is actually worth the shopping time whether it be in a quality store or online.
