Can a positive mindset really change reality, or not really?

Asked by niki (714points) January 20th, 2010

We have now witnessed the ever-growing self-development, motivation, and mindset gurus & motivators in this era.
Although this is not necessarily a bad thing, I do often wonder, if positive mindset can really change one’s reality or hard life circumstances, or not so much?
for example, how about those people who, perhaps due to economic, social, family backgrounds, still have to work in cookie-cutter jobs, or doing those so-called boring, mundane, repetitive jobs such as in factory assembly line, office staffs, lifting heavy items/cargo, etc ?
and the saddest fact of life: how about those who live in third-world poor country such as Africa?
can one really ‘naively’ still think that positive mindset can & will change their desperate life circumstances?
or, all this positive-mindset thing is just a thing developed by the ‘spoiled’ advanced country & people with more haves in life?

Reality is what it is.
Positive thinking without positive action is merely drinking the cool-aid

I know it works—I’ve experienced it, and also experienced the flip side. You put out positive vibes and it changes the way people perceive you and the way you perceive yourself… which in turn brings new opportunities and helps motivate you to action.

positive thinking and positive actions go hand in hand…

Negativity kills. Positivity improves.

Why bother with a half empty glass? Half of the life is gone…and it’s depressing to look at. Why bother refilling it? It will only get half empty again…and eventually all the liquid will evaporate.

A half full cup, on the other hand has experience and potential. What would happen if it was filled all the way? Will the liquid taste better, or the color change to one more delightful?

With all due respect, a positive mind set starts with proper grammar. Then, disposal, of the , comma. And, once, that commences. Try positive thinking.

All that said, I do believe a positive “mindset” can change the world. Maybe not the Leno CoCo thing…but other stuff

Positive thinking does change reality, but it does change how reality affects you and what you do about it. Then what you do about reality can cause change.

I dunno about reality in any kind of objective sense, but a positive mindset affects you, and you have a certain amount of control over your environment.

It usually does, in harsh circumstances like you mentioned, that’s where religion comes in. Or anything that let’s one escape reality. In america though, or the UK etc, it does matter. I’m surrounded my good people like me because of the way I think. But we still can’t escape the fact that reality is sad, harsh, unfair, full of despair, grief and pain and suffering. But too much will make you just give up and kill yourself, so that’s where the positive comes in. People find their positives in different ways is all: drugs, sex, god etc etc.

A positive mindset may change your perceptions, but if you want to change things that are truly negative, you must combine positive thoughts like, “we can change things” with positive actions designed to bring about positive results.

Wishing has never by itself made things change!

It can change your perception of reality…which isn’t always a good thing.

There is a really excellent book about this subject called “Bright-sided, How the Relentless Promotion of PositiveThinking Has Undermined America” by Barbara Ehrenreich

It addresses the willful blindness that has overtaken many people when confronted with “negativity”. Guess what? Negativity exists. Bad things do happen. And the constant and relentless denial of any darkness has, ironically, left many people stumbling around in the dark.

It’s impossible to get out of a situation or career and improve your social standing if you are convinced you will always stay at job managing dirt factory.

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. Positive thinking is just that. It may help you create, go after, or realize opportunity but just thinking good thoughts or great luck has about as much substance as cotton candy.

Just ask Hewitt about how he won the first set against the clever, potentially brilliant “Young” American in the Australian Open a half hour agoLOL!

necessarily. the people you have to deal react differently to you based on your behavior towards them. compare the difference in your interaction with strangers who you are pleasant with compared to those who you treat like furniture.

next, realize that you are a “people” too. the way you treat yourself will also give you a different output from yourself.
