What is the best way of expressing who you are?

Asked by bean (1327points) January 21st, 2010

What do you think expresses who you are… is it music? what is your hobby…. do you feel it expresses you? or is there more to it….

There is no one way. I think conversation can tell a lot, but I also play an instrument. Not being afraid to express all my opinions helps. Of course, in some contexts, that’s not necessarily a good idea.

It’s also a long process. I can’t give it all to you in one sitting. You have to be with me in a variety or situations—work, home, having fun, at the doctor, with my parents, on vacation, etc. As Walt Whitman said, “I contain multitudes.”

I think it probably depends on WHO YOU ARE. It would change from person to person.

By being yourself. The rest will follow.

It is different for every person. Some create art to express themselves, while others with what they wear or the people they hang out with. So many ways!

By being the person that i am now. Different from the rest.
I should be me. :)

You express who you are by being yourself. The medium and method doesn’t mean so much as the fact that you chose it. Who you are can change over time but how you choose to express it could change on a hourly (or faster) basis. We can express who we are in a seemingly infinite number of ways from music to painting to sports to our reactions to others to our choices (that’s a big one, btw). But in the end, it’s all about being yourself and expressing it with each choice you make.

For me,it’s my artwork :)

I think the best expression of who I am is how I treat others.

My way of expressing myself is to do what makes me happy. Usually those hobbies are so unique that it showcases how odd I am. For instance I have a garbage bag full of confetti that I pull out and play with in my living room. I make cupcakes that are decorated in fun ways. I also like strange music and dance to it around the house. Honestly I don’t know how my roommates can stand me but they enjoy the entertainment.

The best way to express who you are is to express who you are.

I express who I am through my writings.

“unto thyself be true!” (my memory forgets who said that…Hamlet by Shakespeare?) Just be who you are…everyone can see through a fake!

Music is my hobbie and I express myself both by what I choose to listen to and also when I play my guitar or piano. The tempo, rhythm and intensity will all be part and parcel to my heart and soul of that moment.

bean's avatar

@Cruiser ahh… i can relate to this :)

Being yourself is the only accurate way. The things that reveal you to others will come with time. There’s no quick, blurb-esque way of quickly letting someone know everything about you. It’s something that people discover through your experiences with them.

gailcalled's avatar

I listen to what people do and not what they say. I do the same for myself.

I am like Cruiser music for me, but I do not write much poetry or lyrics anymore, I use to really enjoy spoken word its called.

I unfortunely kind of stopped to a degree. I still noodle but I am not into it as much as I once was…..disappointing really now that I think of it :|

I express who I am by staying true to my convictions no matter my audience or how much grief I get for it.

Facade's avatar

Without verbal expression, I’m pretty sure people can tell who I am by the way I look and act.

My personality and my behaviors represent who I truly am. I practice what I preach, I’m the real deal, and what you see is what you get.

I express myself through colors – LOTS of color. from all of my tats, to the clothes I wear. Thats my way of expressing myself

Steve_A's avatar

@LethalCupcake you paint? I think tats can be very expressive. I have a friend where I work he has some bad @ss tattoos oddly though I never cared for one.

LethalCupcake's avatar

@Steve_A Nope I don;t paint – I’ve never been very artistic in that way – I can barely draw stick figures lol

@Cruiser Hehehe I just got done recording some stuff and noodling for about an hour. But I do not only play metal and rock. I ve been getting into some old blues finger picking stuff I love it!

I wish I could play classical style music its so lovely it is.

Hey Cruiser is that picture you? you look beastly dude lol :D

oh by the way Sonar is awesome for recording the best program I have used with no real problems.

Cruiser's avatar

@Steve_ A Yeah that’s me all right far from beastly lol!! Is sonar PC based?? I have a tascam digital 4 track me and the boys play through! My 13 yr old has a new J bass and is all into funk slap style playing so I am scrambling to learn some guitar riffs to go along with his style. I like the finger style blues…I suck at playing that but do love the SRV style Texas blues guitar playing.

@Cruiser It is, heres a link they have a web trial which is like 15 or 30 days long but gives you a good idea of it. I use my E609 dynamic and Snowball mic (not the best condenser mic) and use both at the same time I get some pretty good sounds since I am not a studio engineer or the such ya know?

Your life is the best expression of who you are.

I’m really working hard on this at the moment… I’m struggling to find exactly want lynne wants and feels about things…after years of doing everything because it will impress someone else, so expressing it is kinda hard (when you don’t know what it is) but I’m trying to get to know who I am by getting my mind to step out of the way and let the creativity come through.. be like a child…not think about what anyone else thinks (that’s really hard for me) but just let it flow… I’m doing this through journalling, drawing, painting, dreaming, writing, dancing and searching for music that stirs something within me.

I don’t think that you can classify one form of self-expression as better than another. As our flutherites have shown, there are many different ways of expressing yourself and not one person is exactly the same.

With this being said, I believe that I express myself best whenever I help someone or express my love for someone. When I act selfless that is when I feel the most at one with myself. In other words, thats the time I feel like I am expressing myself the most. I may love colors and music, but thats just a little part of me.
Giving my time and energy for someone else is my self-expression. I really love helping others. It feels so empowering, like going on a thrill ride. :) I feel good every time I express myself.
GQ by the way. :) This was very fun for me to answer. :)

I don’t believe there is a specific way, what you see is what you get.
