Do tablet PC styli ("styluses") work with just any tablet PC?

Okay a little tech question…

I use a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet PC…model x41. I lost my stylus a while ago. I finally have gotten around to getting a new one because I miss being able to write on it.

My question is, can I buy just ANY old tablet stylus, or must it be specific to my tablet? The ones for my tablet are expensive and have poor reviews. I don’t care about it fitting into the stylus slot because I have a case so no biggie. I just want something that will let me write on it again.

Not sure if this applies to all of them, but I had a toshiba tablet and it would only work with the Toshiba pens.
