Fight or flight?

Asked by Zen_Again (9931points) January 22nd, 2010

So much violence in the news these days, particularly about random violence and rape, where onlookers stood by motionless, helpless.

Would you fight or flee the scene?

I hope I would try to do something, even if it was just making noise. I read long ago that hollering “Fire” would get help faster.

Flight.

And when they put their guard down come out of nowhere and go apeshit on them. Being a ninja isn’t fighting dirty.

Depends on the situation. I tend to fight. Flight is better, when possible.

I am in no condition to fight physically, I would withdraw, call for help and be a great witness for the prosecution.

I would use my pepper spray, taser, and if I had to: my baseball bat (yes, I have a baseball bat in my car)

Fight. Trained-in behavior. If more than one, I’d hold them at gunpoint until the police arrive.

It depends on the situation. If it’s five people to one- I don’t like those odds if they are armed and I’m not. Might just take some hidden video to use in court instead.

I’m not sure you could accurately predict your actions until you are in such a situation.

Check out the Bystander Effect. There’s usually not a lot we can do.

If you consider the case where that guy in the trench coat pulled out an AK-47 and started blasting at the white house…I would probably do nothing in that scenario, unlike that one civilian who ran up and tackled the guy.

Though recently I saw a story on the news about a woman who was getting raped and onlookers didn’t do much. They did call the police, but it took police 10 mins. to get there, so for 10 mins. they just stood there listening to this poor woman scream “why won’t you do something!?”...I would find it impossible to stand by and do nothing in that situation.

I hope i would do something to aid someone in need. But without being in that situation with adrenaline and fear pumping who knows, I might be a big scaredy cat.

Depends if there was someone that needed protecting. If so I’d happily risk myself for their safety.

hmm, let’s see…both.

I would avoid getting into the situation in the first place, and if, somehow, I was unable to do that, I would run, preferably before things got bad. I’d also get as many others out of the situation as I could.

Fight.I couldn’t live with myself if I stood by and did nothing to help someone in trouble.I don’t own a chicken suit ;))

Nullo's avatar

I like to think that I would fight. Never been in a fight in my life, but I ought to be able to tackle someone and hold them down.

Move over, i am here to help. if i cannot handle this myself, i have 15 friends in my Glock 40 that has my back.

Back in the 70s, there was a woman being raped on a street corner in downtown Nashville. i was the first officer on the scene. this man was tearing the clothes off this woman. i first attempted to pull this man off of her. that did not work. i second sprayed him with pepper spray. that did not work. then, i grabbed my trusty baton and struck him in both his knee caps. you could hear the cracking sound of his knees two blocks away. this worked. saved the woman and called an ambulance for the man. the woman was extremely happy. the man had to be carried away on a stretcher. he was in tears from the pain and i told him, “you have a right to remain silent”. he screamed. “you broke my knees”. i said, “good, next time you try to rape someone, it will have to be a midget since your walking days are over”. he served three years in prison.

I’m much too out of shape to do any fighting, I would just become an extra casualty. I would call for help, since I carry a cell phone with me where ever I go.

At home, I have several means of protecting myself and family, which I wouldn’t hesitate to use.

For me it’s situational, I’ve surprised myself before and not always for the best. An example is last year when a bbq propane tank caught fire outside our store and I along with most everyone else just stood there transfixed by the spreading flames even though I know about propane and explosions and should have immediately gone outside the opposite end of our property. What happened is one man tried to turn off the valve to the tank, he was too stubborn to step away and another very brilliant man ran for a fire extinguisher and charged the fire to put it out. With my experience, I am a bit ashamed it wasn’t me to run for a fire extinguisher.
At least I picked the guy who did as my partner

I have a baseball bat in my car, too. I can just imagine myself saying “Hold on a moment, please, while I get my baseball bat out of the trunk.”

If that doesn’t look like it’s going to work, I think my best recourse is to go for help or call for help. The fierce glare that withers misbehaving children and insolent clerks would probably have no appreciable effect on a committed bad guy.
