What are some good things to do on a hot day?

Asked by FireMadeFlesh (16593points) January 22nd, 2010

Apparently its going to be 39 degrees here today, and it was about the same yesterday. What are some good things that I could do today without getting too hot?

I love lemonades on a hot day.

Oh man, I can’t believe you’re implying 39 degrees is hot. Is that in Celsius? Because in Fahrenheit that is really very cold to me! You could go to the beach or for a walk…

Sprinkler time

@lilikoi Yep, that’s Celsius. I’ll let you do the conversion – I don’t know the imperial system at all.

@tinyfaery I actually woke up at 10 this morning because it was too hot to keep sleeping. I might fall asleep again later when it cools down.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming!

Umm. Are you from Minnesota, or is that Celsius? I’m from Minne-snow-ta and and I’d love a 39 degree day right about now. I’d go for a run. So… umm.

39C is about 102F

Drink a cold one! (or more)

See how many ice cubes you can handle in your undies

Shopping (somewhere where there’s central air), local pool/lake/river and head to an air conditioned bar (if you’re old enough to drink), or check out a museum (if you have one around you).

When I was in Austin with my ex. (she was from there) it was a lovely 108 degrees. We went from her air conditioned apartment, hit a few stores, hung out at Barton Springs, then ended up hanging out at Manuel’s and drank margaritas all afternoon. We went home and showered, then went out dancing. We managed to stay cool.

While I was there, though, we went to Austin City Limits, which was outdoors and it was hotter than hades. I would often pour a whole bottle of ice, cold water over myself, drank plenty of cool beverages and chilled under shady trees.

Go to the movies.

The local pool is looking inviting now, even with its high entry fee. The frustrating thing is that my neighbours have a pool and have been using it since 10:30 this morning. For now I’m just going to grab a cold lemonade from the fridge. Thanks again!

@FireMadeFlesh You need to make friends w/ thee neighbor! What is the entry fee? Where I am, we have public pools (although some in utter disrepair and some not even open) that are free.

You are right – that is HOT in Celsius!!

One question: where do you live?! I’m from MN and I would love to see it over 35 (F).

wilma's avatar

Drink Iced tea and sit in the shade.

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

@lilikoi The entry fee is $5 or thereabouts. I haven’t been there, but my mum says its only got a 25m pool anyway. I’m still used to my home town in the country where I could get in for $2 and they had 3 different sized pools and a water slide (which was great when I was younger).

@ChocolateReigns I’m in Australia, so its summer here. 35F is about the coldest it ever gets here in winter at night. And snow in the streets? Isn’t that a fairytale concept?

Turn on the air conditioner!

If only I could remember what a hot day is.

- Go swimming
– Eat ice cream
– Sit in front of a fan
– Take a cold shower
– Stay indoors
– Sunbathe
– Read books (or your Amazon Kindle) under a shady tree at the park

Think of snow and blowing snow and temperatures of -35 and smile. Don’t you feel better already?

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@Dr_Lawrence Ugg I like to think of it being 102. I’ve had enough of -35.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@FireMadeFlesh You shoulda been here last winter. It seriously was -30. And that wasn’t the windchill, that was the real temperature. We had windchills of -40. I suppose you guys were just laughing at us. It would’ve been the coldest January on record (we only got above 0 three times in the whole month!), but then it totally changed and was 40 degrees ABOVE 0 on the 31st. It was AMAZING.

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

@ChocolateReigns Wow, I can’t even imagine that. Did you have floods from the snow melt on the hot day?

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@FireMadeFlesh Nope. Well, not atleast anywhere near my house. That was the year that a town on the MN/ND border had really bad snowfalls and a huge flood in April or so.
