Should Alcohol Be Sold At Fast Food Chains?

Asked by smashbox (1302points) January 23rd, 2010

Thirsty American’s rejoice as Burger King announces their newest addition: Whopper Bar. The first Whopper Bar will open in the South Beach area of Miami, Fl. serving beer/burger combos to saucy patrons. Reportedly, the trend will continue into other major cities including New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

The Whopper Bar will sell Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors beers for $4.25 in an aluminum bottle to keep them cold. The Whopper combo with a beer costs $7.99, about $2 more than the same combo meal with a soda. Burger Kings in Germany, Singapore, and Venezuela already sell beer, but the South Beach location will be the first on US soil.

Drive thru shots sounds like a great idea…..

Alcohol is served at many other eating establishments, so why not? As long as they follow all the relevant laws, I have no problem with it.

Doesn’t this mean they will have to check everyone whether they are 21 already? (you can get beer at 16 in Germany, so it is more practically feasible here to sell beer at fast ‘food’ places). Imagine all the huge waiting lines.

Qdoba, which is similar to Chipolte’s, sells beer, and used to serve Margaritas.

I bought beer at a McDonalds in Koln, Germany. Society seemed to still function.

Is this any different than selling it at Applebee’s or a similar place? I doubt these particular places have drive throughs that they’d be slinging beer out of, but we have drive through windows at liquor stores, so what’s the difference there?

Awesome.

Can I get a dry martini with my Happy Meal?

It can’t be any worse for your health than a 60oz super size cola.

I don’t see a need to make alcohol even more available than it already is. It’s not as if it’s hard to find. For the sake of people who have to avoid it and people who hope they will, it’s good to have a few places where you can go to eat and not be constantly confronted by it.

Alcohol plus fast food. What a combo meal.

@Jeruba GA! especially “I don’t see and need to make alcohol even more available than it already is. It’s not as if it’s hard to find.”

I wouldn’t mind alcohol at the movie theater (as if i don’t spend enough money there)

robmandu's avatar

@Ansible1, wish granted.

( There are other chains, too. )

I don’t think New Yorkers will go, but good luck to them. We’ve got Slattery’s, Donovan’s and Corner Bistro? Awesome beers on tap at all three and some of the best burgers you’ll get anywhere, for serious. And also Burger Joint at the Parker Meridien, too? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Nah, son, we ain’t goin’ to no “Whopper Bar”.

Great. Now we’ll have toddlers dodging balls being thrown by drunk adults in the ball pit.~
