How do I get mozilla firefox to display bookmarks on my toolbar with an icon related to the marked website instead of a blank page icon?

Asked by VanCityKid (579points) January 23rd, 2010

My Firefox used to display the icons of the bookmarked pages on the toolbar with an icon relating to what the website was automatically (for example, “Fluther” would be that little jelly fish guy icon beside the URL bar at the top). It now has stopped doing this and all my new bookmarked pages are the blank page icon.

How can I fix this?

Try deleting the bookmark, and adding a new one for Fluther in it’s place. Try clicking on the bookmark and letting the page fully load.

Also, you can make the bookmark just the icon by following these steps:

1) Right click the bookmark in question.
2) Select Properties.
3) Highlight everything in the “Name:” section and press space. (Making the field blank, but with a space.)
4) Click Save.

@MebiByte – I tried but it didn’t work. I also used to be able to just drag the address down to the toolbar and it would automatically set it up. It no longer allows me to do this. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it. I know manually attach the bookmark to the toolbar.

Some sites don’t provide favicons, but if you don’t like the blank page look, there a favicon add ons to FF which will create them for you automatically on the fly.

If it doesn’t it by default, force it to!

Download and install this add-on:

Hope this helps!

@VanCityKid If there is a fav icon just to the left of the URL in the address bar, click and hold on it and drag it down into your bookmark toolbar. If there is no Fav Icon showing, you don’t get one on the toolbar because there either is none uploaded to the site or it has not been done properly.

@MebiByte – I downloaded the add on. I select properties then go to browse and select the JPG image that I wish to set for the toolbar but it still doesn’t work.

@ETpro – When I do that it brings down the bookmark to the toolbar automatically but I do not get an image.

@VanCityKid It worked for me when I tested it. Are you saving a gif/jpg to your computer and then browsing for it? Are you clicking save?

@MebiByte – Yeah, I save the picture, put it on my desktop, then browse for it, the picture does show up once I do this but only in the properties box, not the toolbar, then I click save and close. The toolbar remains blank.

@MebiByte – Nevermind! I got it. Thanks for helping me out.
