I have lice and I've been wondering how long it'll take to be considered "clean" again.

Asked by ChocolateReigns (5624points) January 24th, 2010

Well, I had these huge plans for a big sleepover with my best friends because I’m going to have the house nearly all to my self (my dad’s gonna be in the basement). But then I got lice. My mom was saying that as long as we found the last louse 3 days before the day of the party, it would be alright and we wouldn’t have to postpone it. Now she isn’t convinced that 3 days is long enough. We’ve been searching high and low on the net for info about this. Does anyone have some information? It’s not just that we’re wondering about how long we’ll have to be clean to be considered clean before my friends will want to come over, we’re wondering how long it takes to be sure you’ve gotten rid of the lice.

All your answers can be found at Harvard School of Public Health .
It should be noted as well that millions are affected by lice every year and they affect children from every socioeconomic background so it need not be a social stigma.

@SeventhSense Tell that to these two guys at my church…...Oh. My. Goodness. So much for ever getting talked to by a guy like I’m a normal person.

I’m sorry about that.You can imagine how people can be a little wary. This too shall pass my friend

@SeventhSense umm…..that link didn’t really answer this specific question. We already knew all that.

I don’t think there’s a definitive answer other than there is no more appearance of the lice or their eggs. I don’t believe they are as pernicious as bed bugs though which can be extremely difficult to eradicate.

@SeventhSense So what do you think would be a good, common sense answer? Do you think 3 days would be enough?

@ChocolateReigns
Come on you can read. I’m no expert.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@SeventhSense I just thought you might have done this before, or had read some stuff, or something. I just thought you might have an opinion.

@ChocolateReigns
No I have no experience with this.

@SeventhSense Rats. You sounded so knowledgeable. Anybody else out there?

You probably won’t know if you’re truly rid of them yet. I used to be a school nurse and I encountered kids with them all the time. Every now and then, we’d think that someone would be clean and then we’d check again a week or two later (don’t remember exactly the time that had to pass before we’d check again) and every now and then they’d pop up again in the hair. If you’ve done all the usual things – treating the house, washing all the bedding, coats, any possible stuffed animals, brushes and combs, etc., AND treated everybody’s hair and removed each and every nit from your own hair, you’re probably going to be ok, but without a little more time, you probably don’t know 100%.

it’s been a long time but I remember it was two weeks- that was shampoo, fine comb the hair, then do it again in two weeks- you have to use magnification and help to get all the nits- there’s an rx shampoo that works great I forget what it’s called

You can’t just hope they will go away. You have to wash your hair with lice shampoo, pick out all the little things out of you hair and spray your furniture, coats, bedding and everything with lice spray. You can buy the shampoo and spray at any drug store.

If your a guy, get a crew cut. Wash your hair and comb every day. Wipe all counters and change your bedsheet. Wash them in hot water. Anything you have layed on needs to be cleaned. If you’ve been around stuff like (stuff animals) put what you can in a plastic bag and wait a least a month. They need to suffocate. The eggs can come back and hatch in two weeks. When I worked in day care, we had to sanitize everything and children with lice were not allowed for at least 3 days but we would check them for lice every day till the two weeks past and they had the second treatment. Then we would only check them if they would start to scratch.

We are doing all the treatments and everything. But now we’re just combing through our hair and looking for the lice. We haven’t found any for a while, but we’re wondering how long we have to wait before we can go out and about again.
