At an Emergency Room, will they spot THC (main psychoactive substance of marijuana) in standard blood and urine tests? If so, what are the consequences?

Asked by drdoombot (8145points) January 24th, 2010

My friend is in the hospital now, with intense abdominal pain. He called me from the emergency room asking if he should submit urine and blood. He smokes marijuana a few times a week, so he’s worried about what will happen if it shows up in his medical tests.

Is THC something that comes up in the results of standard medical tests or something they must actively test for? If they do find THC in his blood/urine, are there any legal consequences (meaning, does it have to be reported to the police or is it noted somewhere on his medical record)?

Pretty sure there gonna be on to him. Probably didn’t even need the test to know. Luckly having THC in you system isen’t a crime.

They aren’t looking to bust him, just to diagnose him. They won’t call the police.

Tell you friend he is a heap of trouble and to tell you where he hides his stash is so you can get it and hide it for him so he doesn’t get busted!!

If they run a tox screen, it’ll come up..which they might do to make sure it’s nothing related. If they do, yes it’ll be in his charts…they can’t do much about it. I wouldn’t worry. A lot of people smoke pot on occasion and just so happen to need the ER once in a while.

No. Standard blood tests do not test for THC. They would specifically have to get a toxicology screening panel (‘tox screen’) which is only done if substance abuse is suspected & medically relevant. These days tox screens are usually run on urine rather than blood.

Even if he got screened & THC was detected, not much would come of it anyway. A positive test for an illegal substance is not grounds for notification of law enforcement. Medical personnel are too busy to be narks.

If there is reason to screen for chemicals that may account for unusual behaviour, high THC levels will be detected. If you come in with a mystery illness, this type of test may also be run.

If you come in with a routine injury like a broken bone, they may not bother to screen for drugs. If they plan to prescribe medications for pain, however they may run it to avoid the risk of drug interaction for which they could be sued.

This information will be useful to them but they are under no obligation to report it. If you are found in possession of large amounts of marijuana, them may be inclined to report that!

The THC levels may be recorded in the chart.

What if some of the stuff he smoked was laced with some bad sh*t? Wouldn’t your friend want to know this, especially if it could be causing the symptoms? IAC, unless he’s a minor (reporting to his parents), they can’t do sh*t to him unless some other underlying symptoms present (psychosis or other adverse reactions), but even then charges are the last thing on their minds.

Well the THC might be detected depending on how long ago he smoked and if he has a fast or slow metabolism, but if he is a hard time smoker then it would most likely show up on a common drug test.anyways I wouldnt really worry if hes not causing any trouble it would be between him and that hospital. just keep your head up and be proud to bake haha

I would suggest telling the doctor what you did. They can do a better job helping. And most docs won’t give a shit.

@johnpowell Good point. Honesty is always best when it comes to medical care.

Last time i had a peanut allergy incident that forced me to go to the hospital i was HIGH AS SHIT. I actually smoked an entire bowl full of kief out of a gravity bong about 20 min prior to going. They did take a urine test from me while i was there, but they didnt say anything to me about it.
