Why do my teeth hurt when I chew sugar free gum?

Asked by jaketheripper (2779points) January 25th, 2010

Lately I have been on a gum chewing kick. I make sure I chew brands that are good for my teeth like orbit and stride etc… However after a while of chewing my molars begin to hurt like they do when I eat too much sugary food. Why does this happen if the gum is sugar-free?

Does the gum contain mint? If so, then the mint will produce a cooling sensation, which could be painful if you have sensitive teeth. Have you tried using sensitivity toothpaste?

If you try sensitivity toothpaste and your teeth still hurt, you may want to visit your dentist and be checked for cavities.

because everyone over the age of about 12 has some gum recession, which exposes the covering of teeth below the gums, which has feelings- ( I’m not going to explain it scientifically) but most chewing gums have some little bit of acid in them, which irritates this. It’s not harmful but it’s uncomfortable- sugars and aspartame turn to acid in the mouth

@lonelydragon Sometimes, but not always. My teeth aren’t particularly sensitive to cold so I don’t think that’s it

@trailsillustrated The pain I experience Is on the top of my rear molars not the sides so I don’t think that’s it either

I have some fillings, could that be a factor?

Not if your teeth are in a glass of water! ;-D

@jaketheripper it could be, if they are deep fillings. Sometimes molar teeth have hairline cracks- (crazing) that can make them sensitive, or the fillings themselves can have very small cracks. Sugar sensitivity is the symptom for that. You can’t know unless you get an x-ray and someone pokes at it with an explorer. You could try sensodyne if you don’t want to go in.

I dont get the whole sugar free thing. Why replace sugar with some artificiall sweetner.. just one more thing to give you cancer. That’s probably why your teeth hurt, their reacting to all the saccharine.

you have scurvy.

@Ruallreb8ters apart from gum I don’t think I eat anything with artificial sweeteners. I’m more concerned with the immediate health of my teeth than the tiny possibility of future health problems based on my low intake of artificial sweeteners

@jaketheripper Im far from a health profesional, but you did say you were chewing alot of gum, and the A.S. could be why your teeth hurt.

I was under the impression they didn’t have a negative affect on dental health, could be wrong

well just go in and see. you probably need a filling replaced. let us know how it turns out
