Asked by RAWRxRandy (620points) January 25th, 2010

Is it ok to take a Tylenol whenever you have a headache? I only ever use it when i’m in a lot of Pain. My mom said it was bad if used excessively…
I’ve had a bad headache on and off for 2 days though and i took a Tylenol whenever i felt it coming back… is that wrong?
I feel a lot better now though and the Headache’s gone.

Did you happen to read the dosage recommendations on the bottle?

You’re supposed to wait 4–6 hours between taking it. Overdose of Tylenol can cause liver damage.

You’re not supposed to take it more than 4 times a day and not for more than 10 days in a row unless prescribed by a doctor.

40,000 people a year die of liver complications from Tylenol.

excessive use of acetominophen tylenol can cause liver damage. Maximum per 24 hours for a healthy adult with a normal liver is 4,000 mg a day.

Too much is bad for your liver. Read the instructions and follow them.

That means if you’re taking 2 extra strength tylenol for that headache, you need to wait 6–8 hours before taking it again, and no more than 4 times per 24 hours.

Also, a lot of people forget to factor in the acetominophen that is included in other combination medications like vicodin or multi-symptom cold and flu remedies. It all counts toward your maximum 4 grams.

@everyone. Woah woah thank you.
I didnt take over the recommended dosage so im fine for now… I think im just gonna take a nap instead…

You can alternate with ibuprofen if you need something more before you can take more Tylenol.

I was going to take a lot of it when I was a kid but my aunt (whose a nurse) said it’s horrible for your kidneys.

No, APAP (paracetamol) is hepatoxic, which means it is a poison that damages the liver.

Plus, it is not particularly effective at treating headaches, beyond ‘placebo’, which is its primary function.

Tylenol is all I can take with my other meds. You might have adolescent migraine. Rather than go OTC see a Dr. You might find they can give you a prescription. One pill and a short nap and you’re good as new plus you’re not stressed out which can increase migraine.

If you are having frequent headaches I suggest you visit your doctor. When using any over the counter medication follow the directions and do not exceed the recommended dose.

@Bugabear NSAIDs like ibuprofen can cause kidney damage if you overdo. Acetominophen doesn’t affect the kidneys but it can affect the liver.

@everyone Well it was some time ago. Long story short don’t take it unless you have too.
