What are some tasty dog treat recipes (tasty for the dogs)

Asked by lexipoorocks (146points) January 25th, 2010

Ok I have 5 dogs and I wanna make them a special little treat (each) since Perri (one of the dogs birthdays) is coming up. I dont want to use a whole lot a meat but not a lot of flour. If I were to use meat please make it like balogna or turkey or ham. Not like liver or steaks. Oh and Perri is getting a little old. I thought you might just wanna know that because a lot of old dogs cant have like a bowl full of bacon! Ok thanks!

Dogs are seriously not that picky. My sister buys my dog organic dog treats and I tasted one and it tasted like the most boring cookie that ever existed but he goes crazy for them. They have way less tastebuds than us (1/6) and they are concentrated on the tip.

One year, for my old Bub’s 12th birthday (it was his last…) I made him and Winston a batch of dog-friendly cupcakes! They were mostly egg and banana, with a little cinnamon. They were kind of bland, but not too bad!

Lemme see if I can find the recipe.

Here’s the recipe!

Banana and ginger combine to make an aromatic cake that’s not too sweet for dogs. Well chopped nuts make it a festive cake.

⅔ cup mashed bananas
½ cup softened butter
3 large eggs
¾ cup water
2 cups Unbleached Flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tsp ginger
2 teaspoons cinnamon
½ cup chopped pecans

Beat together mashed banana and butter until creamy. Add eggs and water. Beat well. Stir in dry ingredients. Beat until smooth, Add nuts. Spoon batter evenly into oiled and floured bundt pan. Bake at 350° for about 35 minutes. Cool on wire rack 5 minutes, remove from pan, replace on rack and cool.

A waste of time worrying about it. Dogs are dogs and could not care less. Send the difference in what you would spend in “treating’ your dog to Haiti.

I keep it simple, because frankly being a vegetarian I’m not interested in handling meat, and rarely if ever am willing to cook it. I’ve been known to fry up bacon for loved ones on special occasions, but that is pretty much a thing of the past.

So anyhow, every year on Dog B-days we take them for a romp in the park, followed by a car ride to the Burger King drive thru where we purchase them each 2 plain cheeseburgers. These get quartered when we get home, poked with candles, and voila! a birthday song is sung while they watch and drool. It’s usually a 30 second feast for them, but I’m convinced they look forward to it every year.

@JJOUTLAW96 – when it comes to animals, food is not food. All animals have different needs, as well as foods they can and cannot eat. Yeah dogs are much easier than other pets such as birds, but it’s also not good to feed them just any human food.

Pieces of hot dogs are great dog treats.
