Unsolicited "Lonely Hearts" emails. I know they are a scam, but what's the scammer's method?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) January 26th, 2010

I must get a message like this every day or so, sometimes multiple ones per day

“Hi,
My name is miss Cecilia Oma,i saw your contact at (www.REDACTED.com) and became intrested in you, please i want you to send a mail to my email address so that i can give you my picture for you to know whom i am.Here is my email address (ceciliaoma02@REDACTED.com) I believe we can move from here I am waiting for your fast respond.make sure you send me a mail so that i will know you got my message.thanks hoping to hear from you
Cecilia.”

How do the scammers behind these messages move from some poor lonely heart actually following up on such an email to extracting the mark’s money?

Its the sites you visit that have the hackers waiting.

It could be a scammer but most likely a hacker or just someone who is desperate and lonely !!

They are looking for a sucker. Someone that in time will develop “trust”. So when they eventually ask for money you will feel the need to help a “friend”.

I heard that this kind of thing is a regular industry in some African countries. I tried to outsmart one of them by asking for money. They came back and asked for my bank account number. You can’t win.

@LostInParadise Wow, that’s pretty shameless. Also pretty stupid of them to think you would just hand out that information when asked directly.

I got this email today from the Flutherbot.

“Hiya ETpro,

loveonett wrote to you:

NICE TO MEET YOU.
my name is faith.here is my privet e-mail faithnechwa1@hotmail.com
i will like to know you more. so that i can send you my picture and my detail’s for you to know me more so I am waiting for your mail to my email address below. please don’t chat me here just send me mail and i will get back to you with love.”

The account is already cancelled, so it didn’t take the moderators long to figure out we had a scammer in our midst.

Just for kicks and giggles, I did a search of the screen name. It turned up this on another forum. Same scammer, same MO, just a different pool of potential suckers.
