Have any of you tried/used hypnosis to stop or quit or change a habit?

Asked by judochop (16119points) January 26th, 2010

I am curious to find out some results, has hyponsis worked for you or someone you know? Is it worth the money to look in to it? My father tried it to quit smoking and it did not work. I am searching for some insight, can you help?

My husband used hypnotherapy for a couple of months to treat a problem – it worked.

I quit smoking 23 years ago with hypnosis. It was the second time…
Repeat hypnosis may be necessary. I was a three pack a day smoker, it works but may need to be re-applied.

I tried it in an attempt to quit smoking over 20 years ago. No results. I seriously doubt that the guy even really hypnotized me.

Hypnotism/hypnotherapy also derives from self motivation. If you have a strong will and belief that hypnotism can be used as therapy, that can positively reflect on your results. We’re hypnotized everyday; for example, you’re hypnotized when watching a cartoon. When watching, your mind automatically adjusts to a “cartoon setting”, you won’t question how Homer Simpson survived a nuclear blast, you just take it as is.
As in regards to your father, before you spend any hard earned cash on something that you’re unsure may work, let him cut down and look at the positives about not smoking. If his self motivation is strong enough, then look into hypnosis or hypnotherapy.

I used it for weight loss. It did not work long-term. It did leave me with a fear of down escalators, because I thought I was going to fall forward whenever I went on one. (It was falling asleep while on an escalator going doen that was used to induce the trance.)

I had some real issues with food and an eating disorder when I was younger. I tried hypnotherapy to help, but it didn’t work for me. I don’t think I can be hypnotized by someone else, though I do self-hypnosis for trance work, meditation, and calming my anxiety/OCD.
