Website for homeschool students to meet?

Asked by kweenlaura (8points) January 26th, 2010

I started a website where homeschool students can meet and discuss random topics (whatever they want) with other homeschool students. I am homeschooled student myself and I think it’s a great idea. I’m wondering though, how many people do you think will join?

btw, incase your want it, the adress is homeschoolcommunity.webs.com :D

It depends on the amount of publicity and social media awareness your website gets. I believe there is a need for a place for Home School students to meet and interact, but it may take a while for your site to start to grow.

I think the idea has potential. But, it’s getting your site out there that’s the hard part. You might make a beautiful site, but if now one knows about it nothing will happen.

I think you might have done better to promote it through networks related to homeschooling than to try to publicize it in a wide-open forum like this, where you may attract a wider population than you really intended.

Since you are pretty much assured that most of your visitors will be under 18 you really need a solid Terms of Service agreement. And just be warned, it could get a lot of attention from people that might not be the best to have around kids.

I just saw the actually website, and I’m going to add that I would leave this to the professionals. Or at least until you have a good idea on how to manage the web and all the strings that are attached when it comes to making social networkingesque sites.
I don’t think this sort of thing belongs on a Freewebs site.

@Jeruba I don’t think this was just a way to publicize the site. I hope this was a sincere question about the possibility of a homeschool student gathering website.

@aiwendil After seeing the site, I have to agree with you. Putting up a free website and hoping for a large community is almost hopeless. Also, you have no idea what kind of people may show up to it and ask for little kids to meet them places… I’ll stop now, but you get the point.

well technically im not trying to do anything professional at all, im just frustrated that i couldnt find much of anything when searching google for something like it. and @MebiByte it really was just a question…

Looks good so far. I hope you give very detailed information, of what they site is and does. I clicked on the About Us, and don’t see anything yet. As a parent, I would definetly want this type of information, before I allowed my child to sign up.

I also, hope you have at least one moderator, because people on the internet can be mean. I agree, with those who said that the website should be posted to all other homeschool boards, you would most likely get alot of traffic then, once it is up and running. Good luck.

@smashbox i realize that it needs work yet, but keep in mind i’ve hardly started so far…

Allowing that “how many people do you think will join?” was just a question,

(a) it is likely to be a fruitless one (which is what made me infer another purpose) because we on fluther would have no way of knowing how many people might join, other than to say that it is going to be a number less than or equal to the number of people who hear about it, and

(b) a posting in a place like this might still attract unwanted attention, including from people who are definitely over the age of 18. Hence the caution.

Related thought-Don’t you think, given the already cloistered environment of home schooling, it would be wiser to encourage real live face-to-face socialization?

I’m new here – thought I posted before but nothing showed up. . . . .
I was looking for a site for homeschool students, too. The webpage listed in the original question is no longer available. I started a site for our family’s use and have made it public, although only family and friends are involved so far. It’s worldstaracademy.com if anyone’s interested.
