Is batman insane?

Asked by jackm (6212points) January 26th, 2010

I have never read the batman comics, or really watched the movies (Other than the Dark Knight) but after watching my friend play a batman video game (Arkham Asylum) I have decided he is insane. My friend is against this idea. (He read the comics as a kid)

In my opinion anyone who dresses up as a bat to fight crime is insane. Even the fact that he saves jokers life repeatedly when he knows doing this will get more innocent people killed seems to be a sign of insanity.

Opinions?

I think you misheard. Batman is Bruce Wayne. Not “In Sane”

rangerr's avatar

Ahem. Batman/Bruce is not insane.
If you saw your parents get shot, I’m pretty sure that you’d be a little messed up in the head, too.
But he’s not insane.

Plus, if he was, he wouldn’t be able to control his actions.

Batman is the true Hero. ONLY BATMAN!!!

I have never read the batman comics, or really watched the movies….I have decided he is insane.
umm ok…maybe we’re all insane for having a debate about a comic book character

talljasperman's avatar

only the writers are insane….lol just joking…. Batman is the opposite of The Joker… he follows rules to the letter…perhaps The Batman is so far from neutral that he is is too far opposite from the Joker….batman is lawful and the joker is chaotic….both the batman and the joker are ill but i would rather met the batman in a dark alley than the joker.

rangerr's avatar

@talljasperman There’s A LOT more to Batman than his confrontations with The Joker… :l

@rangerr
He’s a committed bachelor, his one servant is a man, he loves tights, capes, thigh high boots, Boy Wonder…I’m getting a different vibe from insane

J0E's avatar

@SeventhSense Holy crap! I’ve never heard anyone make that connection before!!!!!!!!

if frank miller is writting the story then the answer is yes he is insane, frank miller plays off batmans mental issues, this is why all of frank miller’s adaptations of batman sell so many copies, if your a real fan boy then you’ve probably noticed how the dark night kind of resembles the graphic novel ” the dark knight returns ” especially the joker..

ALSO. The whole… “man dressed up as a bat is insane” argument is really a bad one in my opinion.
First. He uses it in a practical way. He uses it as a symbol of how he conquered his worst fear.
Second, he lives in a universe where it’s normal to wear funny costumes and masks as do we.

I feel like making judgments while not knowing anything about the history of the character is pretty insane.

SeventhSense's avatar

I’m getting such a kick out of this…It makes perfect sense now. If he had a fear of flying he would dress as a stewardess. :P
edit:i can’t wait until uber finds this thread

There is a really good Batman written by Alan Moore called “Batman the Killing Joke”. He showed how Batman and the Joker are really not that different.

SuperMouse's avatar

Could a fellow who looks like this, hangs out with this guy and drives one of these really be considered insane? I think not.

augustlan's avatar

Not insane… just really, really pissed off.

oratio's avatar

@SuperMouse Yup. Kind of like this guy. Sean Connery as a poster boy for mental stability in Zardoz.

LMAO^
Oh not not the Highlander lookin’ like Borat!

SeventhSense's avatar

But actually Batman is my favorite super hero. I love the back story….
although the pole, the back door bat cave, flaming car…

tinyfaery's avatar

All signs point to yes.

SheWasAll_'s avatar

Definitely not. He saw his parents killed when he was a youngin and vowed to rid his city of the criminal element so no one else would have to deal with such pain and suffering. And if he just killed the Joker (or any other bad guy) he would be just like them. It all seems pretty sane to me. Maybe you’re confusing insanity with bravery.

monocle's avatar

Meh… I suppose If he were a regular Joe without any problems, he wouldn’t be as interesting.

judochop's avatar

Batman is pretty much the only sane, ass-kicking, cape-wearing, man with a mask in the biz.

Supacase's avatar

@judochop Spiderman is sane. Right?

Jude's avatar

Perhaps.

Let Batman and Robin go do their thang.

Now, could I have Electra, please? “Hola!”

@jmah only if you share!

Jude's avatar

@liminal I’ll share. :)

judochop's avatar

@Supacase Spiderman does not wear a cape or a mask. He wears a spandex suit with a full faced hood. How on earth do you get a great answer for answering it wrong? Batmans coming to kick your ass right now Supa. :)

The mental status of a fictional character that originated in a comic book is not possible to determine nor do I consider it one of the pressing issues requiring an answer.

My question to you would be, “Why do you consider this question important and how will the answer impact your life?

markyy's avatar

Have you even seen the movie or the game? It becomes quite clear the costume is a big part of his tactics, spreading fear. He has no real superpower, so he needed something to become bigger than life, bigger than any human could ever be, a myth, hence the costume.

@Dr_Lawrence Do you want to issue an official stamp of disapproval?

Kokoro's avatar

It may just be me, but I see nothing wrong in discussing whether a comic book character is insane or not. It’s actually quite a topic in my opinion – even if Batman is a fictional character, he is still one made up of many peoples’ characteristics. Just because Batman’s story is not real does not mean that the situations and feelings he has are non existent in everyday people in real life.

Noting how he has lost his parents, not to mention is one of the richest men in the world/country, that can make you have many a trust issues. Dealing with people at Wayne Industries in the day, and the stress of any sort of dissaproval from Gotham’s public for Batman. It can weigh on a person, you know? Batman is a vigilante, he may have to sacrifice a bit as long as he gets the job done, which is to protect people.

As @markyy said, the costume is extremely necessary. Gotham needs an image to look up to, to look for as hope or as for fear as said. Not some dude that looks just like them. They just wouldn’t take him seriously. The same reason why Superman, Spider-Man, etc wear costumes. It’s necessary. I do not think Bruce Wayne is insane, he’s got quite a clear albeit dark and tortured mind.

judochop's avatar

Why do you even stir the pot, just to tell us you don’t care? WTF?

Supacase's avatar

@judochop I concede on the cape but Spidey does indeed wear a mask. :)

judochop's avatar

@Supacase
Shhhhh, he can hear your thoughts.

jackm's avatar

@markyy
Yes, I have seen the movie and watched the whole game. I know the bat suit is to inspire fear, but that does not make it any less weird. Also, just because his parents were murdered does not mean his reaction is normal. A normal reaction is to grieve for a while and then move on.

tinyfaery's avatar

If Batman were real he would definitely be committed.

Kokoro's avatar

@jackm a “normal” reaction is to grieve and move on? Try explaining that to someone who watched their parents die in front of them at such an age.

SeventhSense's avatar

@Kokoro
Way too much time on your hands..next up
Homer Simpson The Man Behind the Eating Disorder

Kokoro's avatar

@SeventhSense Comparing Homer Simpson to Batman is quite offensive in my book. He’s a much deeper character than that. >.>

SeventhSense's avatar

@Kokoro
Yes of course he’s no Peter Griffin.

Sinkintome's avatar

Yes, The Batman is completely “insane”. I have read the books, the comic books, watched the movies, listened to the radio broadcast, read the blogs, played the games. Yes, he is insane ,not just the dressing up in the bat costume either. While he is a guinness and an overly skilled fighter. There is no such thing as “Bruce Wayne”. Its only a cover up for the bat. I’ve written reports on the man/thing. (I also have no life but ,yet that is another topic…) The only plausible fact i can state though is that he is crazy in our world and a hero in another.
