Why are the tortilla companies sneaking smaller tortillas under the larger ones?

Asked by jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities (20019points) January 27th, 2010

It seems like the last few times I’ve gotten a package of tortillas, the innermost ones are smaller than the outer ones. The two on the top and bottom of the package are full sized so I didn’t notice while purchasing them, but when I get home, I notice the inner ones are smaller (usually an inch difference in diameter, sometimes more). When I go to make a quesadilla, it’s a mess because of the odd sizes.

Has anyone else noticed this? I am just going crazy? Is Big Tortilla just out to get me?

This happens to me every time I make quesadillas. You just need to learn how to match each tortilla with one that is similar in size. It’s not that hard jeff. ;)

I see this too. I doubt it is a cost saving thing done by the makers. I would bet that the ones on the outside are absorbing moisture from the ones on the inside. Making them larger.

Dear lord, you guys are crazy. Thanks for the belly laugh; I’m leaking tears. Though that might also be from the Dayquil and vodka :o)

To answer your question, all my tortillas are roughly the same size. Maybe you have an extremely concentrated ant problem.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities and @jonsblond You could just fold one tortilla in half, you know. Use two and fold each in half and you’ll have the same amount and your tortillas will fit perfectly.
I personally haven’t noticed this. Obviously this means the tortilla fairy loves me more.

This is why I buy my tortillas hand made. You get a bit of a size differential but not so much you really notice. plus they taste like eleventy-bajillion times better.

@johnpowell You probably nailed it.

I still think those tortilla jerks are out to get me.

That’s even worse than smallening the Reese’s Peanut Butter cups because they’re trying to hide it. Bunch of rat bastards.

@the_state_of_wisconsin: If you’ve ever made a loaf of bread from scratch, you would understand why they’re shaped that way…

I fully thought I was the only one…

I feel your pain Jeff. It is a conspiracy and the CIA are in on it.

Are you buying big brand tortillas? I’d avoid all tortillas that have calcium propionate listed in the ingredients. Makes tortillas smell like feet.

Why else? To save money, of course. It’s always all about the money. (shakes head)

@John @ jeff : Wait. If they get larger from absorbing moisture from surrounding tortillas, then wouldn’t the center tortillas be larger because they have tortillas on each side?
