Graffiti: Street Art or Garbage?

Asked by speakerhead (256points) March 1st, 2008

I believe that some graffiti is complete and utter garbage, but I also believe that their are some very good ones from people like OBEY or Futura.

Graffitti is art if and only if it adds to or complements the surrounding area AND if it doesn’t promote or extend any form of violence or racism. I agree with you that some graffitti is garbage. Like the random writings on billboards. But I also agree with you that other graffitti is urban art.

graffitti is usually art, but not when it comes to the random scribbles of teens wanting to rebel who have no art talent what so ever.

I agree with what’s been said. I also don’t like it when graffiti defaces private businesses or homes. If you can take a wall that’s unused and make it look artsy and hip, then you’ve done something worth talking about. If you’re just scrawling your name or your gang’s name on someone’s garage door, you’re just being disrespectful.

As a graffiti ARTIST myself, I have to say, I’ve seen my fair share of rubbish. to all you “taggers” out there, please, grow up. I’m sorry your allowance isn’t big enough, but being a cool rebel isn’t going to do anything but negatively impact your environment. Graffiti can be beautiful. With placement and thought, graffiti can enhance any landscape. I know banksy was already mentioned, but he is a prime example of street art done right. Also, look at some of the work in Brazil and São Paulo, drab impacted communities are brought to live with vivid colours and bursting imagery.

Also, check out the Wooster Collective , and the incredible work of Alexandre Orion

I love graffiti! But only nice stuff, if its really rude or pornographic (trust me i’ve seen worse) then its just rubbish. I think graffiti should be appraised more, instead of people thinking its vandalism.

Graffiti is most definitely art in any form, although I do not support vandalism in order to make it. As you can see by my avatar, I am a big fan of obey. When graffiti is used to make a point or beautify an area I love it. But when I see that some poser teenager spray painted his name on a wall I just ignore it.

i tag. i love graffiti i think its beautiful. its bassicaly all we do in my town and its not to deface property we dont do it on anyones home we do it on empty boring walls that belong to old buildings. i ride around with my small team of 4 people taging my nick and my towns name onto trucks so that teams from other towns know whats really good and for people to look at my art. i hate when people say its a crime. all were doing is drawing and on things people dont care about, whats the harm in that.
