Do you think you can learn from your dreams?

Asked by Blonderaven (387points) January 29th, 2010

A little while ago I would have said no, but then I had two dreams that changed my mind.

It goes against my way of thinking to believe we can learn from dreams. After all, dreams are really just stuff already in your head getting scrambled around. right?

Have you ever learned from a dream? Do you think people can?

Dreams don’t really teach you new information. But they can reveal information that may not have been so obvious to you; they can reveal hidden information, but I don’t believe they can give you new information.

Dreams can be so powerful. I’ve learned to forgive a few people and rekindled old friendships from dreams I’ve had of them.

Yes. I dreamed something last night that taught me an incredibly valuable lesson. I won’t go into detail about it on a public forum, but it really did give me a great epiphany.

@DominicX that’s exactly what my thoughts were (worded very eloquently by you). GA!

You know that feeling of Dejavu? That comes from your dreams… When you feel Dejavu it means that you have already had a dream of what is happening. I first noticed this when I was about 10. I wasn’t completely sure so I started a dream journal, As soon as I would wake up I would write down anything I can remember. Sure enough 9 years later it happened, down to details in my dream. the problem is that you can’t remember everything you’ve been dreaming – just some. These dreams are called pre-cognitive dreams… here are some sites that have a little more info Here

Oh, yes. You can’t take them literally, of course, and you can’t read the future from them or learn other people’s truths from your dreams about them. But you can use them as a window into yourself. Everything in your dreams comes from you and only you. An insightful examination of the dreams that strike us as significant can show us things we didn’t know about our fears and anxieties, ourselves in relation to others, and our true hopes, needs, and desires.

I regard dreams as one of the best sources of self-knowledge precisely because I do not choose or control them and can’t use them to hide things I’d rather not see.

Good or bad dreams to me are merely reminders to the things that are significant in your life. I don’t dream much but when I do it is pretty vivid. I had a wonderful dream about a dear friend who means the world to me.

They never reveal anything new to me. My dreams tend to get “literal” (not a good thing since most of the dreams I get are either nightmares or something that can never happen), not revealing.

I think you can cultivate useful (= revealing) dreams.

Absolutely you can learn from your dreams, though of course not all of them.
