On a Mac, how do you make the ° sign?

Asked by jbfletcherfan (13212points) January 30th, 2010

A good friend of mine just got a Mac computer, & the alt248 doesn’t make the degree sign. She was writing me an email the other day. She tried to use that method & it wiped out her whole mail. Does anyone out there know how to do this on a Mac?

Try @gailcalled; she uses a Mac.

Option + k = ˚

‘k’ as in Kelvin perhaps?

Degree symbol is shift+option+8.

I noticed that the Shift+Option+8 one is bigger than the Option+K one. Which one is the standard? Or does it not even matter? :\

Nice find. I’d go with the bigger one.

Thanks, everyone. I’ve sent this to her. I knew I could count on you. :-)

˚ °. First one is option + k. 22˚ or 22°.

I never remember key combinations. So I google the symbol, copy and paste. The two common ones for me are:
“registered trademark symbol ®
“copyright symbol” ©

I use Shift+Option+8 for the degree symbol. It’s identified that way on this handy website: http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/codemac.html

Character Viewer is handy. I don’t even bother to remember the shortcuts.

Character Viewer is a great idea! I can never find the dang thing, so I now display the character viewer in the menu bar. Really handy! For those who want to do the same:

Make sure your input menu appears in the menu bar (picture of a flag, way up at the right, pretty close to the date/time). If it doesn’t, then turn it on:
Sys Prefs > Language & Text > Show Input menu in menu bar

Now, display the character viewer:
Sys Prefs > Keyboard > Show Keyboard & Character Viewer in menu bar

In the following sentence, I don’t know what “click Insert” means. “Highlight the symbol needed, then drag the symbol into the document—or click Insert—.

Otherwise I am very much at home with the Keyboard and Character Viewers. And if I want, I can type in γρεεκ ψαραψτερσ.

Thanks a lot for all your help, guys. I emailed her this stuff, she tried it & it works. :-) She’s a happy camper.

If you click on the character you want and then click “insert”, it will add it to whatever document you have open. But, it’s easier to just click and drag the symbol in.

Aha. I found the little “insert” oval window on the Keyboard Viewer.

CopyPasteCharacter is also really handy for this type of thing, for any operating system.
