Well, I think the best state depends on a lot of things that you might use to evaluate it. Most states have a lot to recommend them.

Washington State fits your criteria of clean and not a lot of trash, but Western Washington has a lot of misty rain and cloudy days.

Fred931's avatar

BTW, @Esculent You’re idea of a good state appears to be whether or not their highways are clean. ALL highways will have trash on them. ALL of them.

SuperMouse's avatar

I am partial to California myself.

lfino's avatar

I was pretty fond of South Carolina. My daughter and I went there in May. Love the beach. Love the people. Love the history. Love the countryside.

Esculent's avatar

@Fred931 well yea but when you go to Texas and then to Colorado the difference in trash is like the difference between a rock and a diamond.

jonsblond's avatar

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is everything that you describe.

jrpowell's avatar

Oregon is pretty and clean. And we don’t have a sales tax. 99 cents means 99 cents.

Arp's avatar

Does Wyoming HAVE roads?

Trillian's avatar

@jonsblond yes it is. Have you been to the Mystery Spot?

Ruallreb8ters's avatar

Thats easy.. world famous California

DeanV's avatar

Oregon and Washington are at the top of my list. Like California, but more relaxed, and the people are nicer. There’s also not the budget crisis like California’s got, which could possibly lead to roads being clean.

And like @johnpowell said, no sales tax.

raoool's avatar

I prefer a state of non-ordinary reality

jonsblond's avatar

@Trillian We didn’t visit the Mystery Spot. We stayed in Silver City and spent a couple of days hiking in The Porkies. I would move there if I could find work. It is absolutely beautiful and the people are so friendly.

Trillian's avatar

Yeah, sigh. I was raised in Alpena, but I’d move to the UP if I could.

wundayatta's avatar

The state of ecstasy.

Pandora's avatar

@wundayatta That is 2nd in my book, I personally like the State of Rest but not the final Rest. LOL
Until you can clean out a State of bigots, poverty, dirty water, pollutants, crime, and nasty people, ignorant people and poor education, than none are best. They all have their own little rotten apples in each.

Nullo's avatar

Oklahoma was very pretty. So was Arkansas.
I tend to focus on the merits of a region rather than a state.
My ideal region, for instance, would look like somebody had dropped some Alps into the Ozarks, and then expanded the Gulf of Mexico northwards to make some beachfront property.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

The state of Happiness :)

Trillian's avatar

I frequently find myself in the state of confusion. Does that count?

Fred931's avatar

The state of insanity… Well, for me at least.

This question just got effed.

California and Nevada are pretty great. I’m not biased at all.

California is where I live now and have been living for a long time. It’s beautiful, the weather is excellent, it has the most varied geography out of any of the states (desert, warm beaches, redwood forest, snow-capped mountains, agricultural valleys, golden hills); it’s like a mini-country. I’ve never had a bad experience with people being mean, but I can’t say I have for any of the states I’ve been in. California is pretty clean, though the lower-rent areas of the Bay Area and the L.A. area can be a little dirty. California is fun. I can’t tell you how many road trips I’ve had throughout California. Loved every minute of every one.

Nevada is, contrary to popular belief, not entirely desert. Okay, maybe 90% desert, but not completely. The most beautiful part of Nevada is the part around Lake Tahoe: the Carson Valley, Douglas County, Kingsbury, and of course the Eastshore of the lake, which is the most expensive part of the lake and has the most beautiful beaches with crystal clear aqua blue water and large rocks. Nevada is also home to some of the oldest trees in the world and some of the most interesting wild-west towns. Yes, there’s gambling and prostitution, but it’s also just a regular place with regular people. Nevada is where I was born and I will always love it. :)

I hated Ne-va-DUHHH

DominicX's avatar

@Mike_Hunt

Yeah, that’s right, not “ne-VAH-duh”. I will crucify anyone who says that…

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Uh-oh I’m sorry Dominic! Don’t hurt me!

There’s a reason so many people live in southern CALIFORNIA!

filmfann's avatar

Northern California.
Washington is cool, and Nevada is where my family go to die, but I love the culture, weather, casualness, and friendliness of the Bay.

Sarcasm's avatar

For now, I’m going to go with California.
It’s just.. the bees’ knees. I wish I lived further north though.

Trillian's avatar

@Sarcasm, oh yeah? Well I think the U P is the cats pajamas. So there.~

pat's avatar

Vermont. Highest amount of atheists in the US. Low crime rate as well. Coincidence? No.

mass_pike4's avatar

I’d say Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is a beautiful city, very clean in fact. I like New England, and Pennsylvania has a lot to offer with a lot of pretty countryside

Supacase's avatar

All I know is, out of the 39 states I have visited, Oregon is where I would live if given the choice.

Mamradpivo's avatar

Colorado for the win!

rottenit's avatar

Minnafrekensotta!

VT a close 2nd

Fuck Illinois!

Nullo's avatar

@pat
Somehow, I doubt that your correlation has any significance.

TheLoneMonk's avatar

I’d vote for Wisconsin. Just leave out a small portion of Milwaukee that is a little dirty.

misterx's avatar

South Dakota hands down… I just don’t know where you people get your information because none of those states come close… it’s just a good state… And no I don’t live there, I live in Florida… so that bias is out

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

New York! Obviously.

Esculent's avatar

@pat your a little off christians don’t kill people from what the news says it’s the priests who go on trips to the forest with little boys.

mass_pike4's avatar

worst state??? Connecticut

lfino's avatar

@mass_pike4, I’ve never been there, but why do you say that?

JLeslie's avatar

So far for me the state with the best people is not the state with the best roads, best climate, etc. I like it warm, so southeast FL was my favorite place to live, but the friendliest people were in the midwest. I lived in MI while in college and they are the most friendly, nonjudgemental, genuine people I have ever met, and it is not just being there during the college years, I go back quite often and find my experience to almost always be good. The south is nice to your face, but not necessarily behind your back, and best if you think like them to really get along. They don’t enjoy a spirited debate like say a northeasterner, which brings me to the state of NY. Really a fantastic state. NYC does not need any explaining and upstate is beautiful with lakes, mountains, braches, both small and large cities, but colllddd in the winter. California is enticing also, having varied climates, beach, mountains, and the people I know from there have been very nice, but I have not spent a lot of time there.

mass_pike4's avatar

@mass_pike4: Because I live here…highest taxed state, there are a bunch of stuck up people, and lets face it, it’s Connecticut.
