Is this ebay item too good to be true?

I just saw this on ebay.co.uk and the first thing that popped into my head was “what is the catch?”. I know it contains no peripherals and I doubt it has an OS installed, but what else do see that is wrong with it? (I am a tech nub).

I do not want to buy this, but am still interested. Might stalk them for in the future when I have money to blow.

People who bought them seem to be happy with the product. It’s possible that these “fell off the back of a truck”.

You can build a better computer yourself for the same money, but given markup (these people do not run charities), it’s not too bad.

I wouldn’t touch it with yours, though, because I know I can build better for less.

@buckyboy – nah. These are independent OEM builds. They’re not dodgy; they’re just not as great value for money as they at first seem.

I wouldn’t call it “too good to be true”. The price seems about right for what you are getting. If you want a good deal, build a PC yourself, like @the100thmonkey said. It’s really not that difficult and there is plenty of support out there.

There’s a similar thing here on my local Craigslist except that it’s for a Mac with similar specs and price range. But obviously not an Apple authorized product and therefore a “Hackintosh”.

I spoke with the guy several times and checked out refs. for satisfied customers which he gave me but I ultimately decided against it.

If I were planning to live in this area where he could service any problems which may arise, I might have considered it.

But if I’m living elsewhere, that could be really problematic so I ultimately opted for a used Mac instead. At least I don’t have to be afraid to bring it into an Apple store should the need ever arise.

Well, looking at the components used (Asrock motherboard, 9 5 00 GT, and the RAM is probably also no-name) it is no surprise that it is so cheap. I would stay away from it.

Mmm I have always been interested in building my own PC, but could someone enlighten me into the ingredients needed to make one? I thought that it would be more expensive.

Well, if you scroll down the ebay page you linked, you’ll see the basic ingredients needed to put a PC together. They are:

Motherboard
Processor
RAM
Video card
Disk (storage)
Sound chip (often part of the motherboard)
Power supply
Case
Operating System

If you’re going to build your own PC, you need all of the above, although how much it costs and what parts are most suitable for you will be dependent on use. What do you intend to use the PC for?
