Why do exaggerated jaw movements during gum chewing mean someone's "bitchy"?

Asked by jackm (6212points) February 4th, 2010

In women specifically. Similarly, they usually mean a guy is apathetic.

Can you trace these stereotypes to a specific cultural reference?

Hmmmm, I don’t know, I think the question should be: Why do bitches chew gum in an exaggerated manner? Lol….

LOL. My husband hates when I chew gum, because I click and clack and chew like a cow (I LOVE chewing gum, but almost never do it around him), and he says I look and sound like I should be on a street corner. He never mentioned bitchy.

Yeah, more trashy I would say.

It just means the gum is bouncy and hard to control ;)

Reminds me of a girl from the 80’s chewing gum loudly and acting all ditzy.

A Frenchmen is calmly having his breakfast when an American (noisily chewing gum) sits beside him.

The Frenchman ignores the American who (not happy about this) starts a conversation.

American: “Do you eat the whole bread?”

French (in a bad mood): “Of course!”

American: “We don’t. We only eat what is inside and the outside we put together in a container, recycle it, transform it into croissants and sell it to France.”

The French listens in silence.

The American insists: “Do you eat the bread with jam?”

French (now more annoyed): “Of course!”

American: “We don’t. We eat fresh fruit for our breakfast, put all the seed and the rest in containers, recycle them, transform them into jam and sell the jam to France.”

The Frenchman then asks: “And what do you do with condoms once you used them?”

American: “We throw them away, of course!”

French: “We don’t. We put them in a container, recycle them, transform them into chewing gum and sell it to America.”

I never heard that about gum chewing. I don’t chew gum very often and I try to remember to keep my mouth closed when I do. Open mouth gum chewing, to me, denotes a lack of cogitative abilities.

Although modern chewing gum was invented in the late 19th century, the stereotype that you reference only makes sense in the context of a TV/Film saturated/driven market. So, it makes sense to me that the stereotype you have pointed out began in the 1950’s when girls started thinking it was cool to chew gum and blow bubbles in public.

Watch nearly any episode of Happy Days or Laverne & Shriley, or the movie Grease. The stereotype is definitely there.

Chewing loudly and with your mouth open are considered impolite when eating and I think the expectation extends to chewing gum. Chewing gum like that conveys a “yeah, what about it?” attitude that suggests a disregard for manners.

It comes from the eighties. It’s best not to know.
