Solution to chapped lips?

Asked by dr34m3r (311points) February 9th, 2010

Hello Fluther, what is your personal remedy to chapped lips?

My mom tells me to drink lots of water and put vasaline on my lips before bed and I wake up.

Sometimes I use lip balm throughout the day, but I tend to lose it quite often.

I sometimes rub sugar on my lips and use it as an exfoliant. It softens them and makes them smoother.

There are many things to remedy this:

-Drinking lots of water – yes this helps a lot.
-Not all lip balms and chapsticks are created equal. I like this one, and also like Carmex, but anything with menthol will feel good.
-My dentist and orthodontist told me that once my teeth are straightened, I’ll be much less likely to suffer from chapped lips. Something about naturally being able to keep your mouth closed, which was hard to do before I started wearing braces. I think if you breath from your mouth (like I tend to do), you’re more prone to chapped lips. Might have something to do with the act of drawing air over your lips, which probably aids in evaporation of moisture.
-Regular exercise couldn’t hurt – good circulation helps everything.
-Also if you live in a place with very low humidity, it may help to get a humidifier.

Aveeno balm. It works wonders for me. I could frenchkiss a chainsaw, and it would return my lips to normal.

Leave them alone. Don’t lick them or put anything on them.

Consume more vitamin C and E.

Carmex works wonders.

I use beeswax lip balm from Burt’s Bees, it’s not tested on animals, 98% natural or more.
Also, I like to mix honey and sugar to make a delicious exfoliant for my lips. :)

Aquaphor is my friend. It is basically glorified petroleum jelly, but it is a miracle cure for chapped lips.

Carmex all day everyday, its an addiction.

@SuperMouse I forgot about Aquaphor! We have just started using it this winter – our daughter’s face and hands were so red and chapped.
