Where did "Barber Shop" quartets get their name?

Also, what is the difference between “Barber Shop” quartets and regular ones? I ask this because my Dad had a singing valentine delivered to my step-mom (It was sweet), and after they were done, I asked these questions and all four didn’t really know. Thanks in advance!
