Has anybody experienced an epiphany that caused you to change something drastic in your life?

Asked by Tenpinmaster (2925points) February 15th, 2010

A moment of truth that slapped you in the face telling you that something needs to change. After a year of marriage I remember waking up at 8:16 on a Saturday morning and suddenly realized that I was absolutely done with the relationship. It was like I was hit with this realization that things were absolutely going no where and something needed to change. Have any of you experienced this moment of clarity?

I had that same dream 44 years ago. but, my afterthoughts were just the opposite of yours. i looked over at my wife and realized what a lucky man i was. cupid must have been sitting on my shoulder. i smiled, turned over and went back to sleep.

Sorry that your dream was just the opposite. hope it worked out for you.

@lucillelucillelucille @Broken_Arrow What has perpetrated this moment of clarity? Was it a relationship issue or some other kind of life stuff

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@john65pennington Its ok :) i have a fellow jellie that I do that too all the time now. I remember it hit me that I truly want to marry this person but still waiting for the right moment to ask her ^.^

TMaster….good for you. its hard to explain to someone when you know you have just the right person for you and to marry. you just know these things. your first experience sounds like it had “no” written all over it. you must be on the right track now and do something really special before you ask the question. something both of you will remember all of your lives together. good memories are worth their weight in gold.

Both.A complete realization that “Life is too short” I thought I knew, but I didn’t really know.

Many times, I hope it keeps happening. Which is a sign that I keep improving. There is no perfect, so if I’m not improving then I must be getting worse.

Phoesbusq,,,,,,,,,,do you think?

For me (because I’m so dense sometimes—bet I get lots of lurve for that part of the quip) the sequence is often:
1) Something happens
2) I realize what a great thing it was that that thing hapened—and my life changes for the better

Yes, when I turned 29, I had an early 30th birthday crisis. I realized my life was nothing like I wanted it to be.

Before I turned 30 I was divorced and in a new job.

I’m still waiting for mine and I imagine that I will sit on my deathbed and think…why did I not realise that my whole life, collectively was the epiphany I was looking for…

Last November I had a Life is Too Short moment too where after a particularly vigorous run I was so out of breath I realized I am not getting any younger and could no longer run like I used to be able to even a few years ago. It hit me hard like a lightning bolt and it was a big HUGE moment of clarity as you say! Needless to say I couldn’t sleep that night thinking it over. Since then my life has been a constant battle of the everyday obligations pitted against the ticking of time.

kidkosmik's avatar

Indeed, although I do not recall the exact time and place this happened. My story is similar to yours and others here. Life is too short to spend most of it thinking “what if”?

I was just laid off from a company I have worked at for 30 years. I am waiting for that epiphany to hit me telling me what kind of job I would like to be in next. I’m hoping the epiphany will take away this feeling of utter panic I am having right now.

When I discovered I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, I looked at her father and said, “What the heck am I doing with a hairy alcoholic??” Both my sisters had gotten pregnant and married alcoholics with excessive body hair and I appeared to be following in their footsteps.
When we told my mom I was pregnant she said, “What are you going to do?”
My immediate response was, “I“M NOT GETTING MARRIED!”
It was the best decision of my life. I was a naive 18 year old kid and he was a controlling 36 year old man.
The Epiphany came at that moment and caused me to start acting responsibly. I was no longer screwing up my life, If I didn’t change I would be screwing up my child’s life as well.
The world looks very different when you are responsible for another.

chyna's avatar

@Judi lol on the “hairy alcoholic”!

Yes, I was in a very painful work situation for many years (working in a family business.) On a vacation, I woke up in the middle of the night with the realization that I had to leave. When we got back, I announced my resignation date.

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@Judi Oh wow.. that is crazy. I’m glad that it hit you. SOmetimes it is very subtle how that happens, and sometimes it hits you like a lightning bolt.

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@marinelife wow thats great! I hope things are much better now.

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@john65pennington thank you for the encouraging remarks :)

You know life is too short like some of you have stated. The last 10 years have just been wasted and I also have had the same moment of clarity.. I want to do something great in the next 10 years before my body starts breaking down due to natural causes.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

@Judi that’s a damn good one. For you and your daughter.

nebule's avatar

@chyna I’ve been made redundant three times and each time have hoped for the epiphany on the job front… that hasn’t come either… I hope you get your’s soon xx I am however, trying to discover it myself now by exploring my artistic, creative childlike side, which is where I think and hope the answer lies… because I sure as hell aint got it :-s Anyway, my condolences and all the best xx

I almost died in 2008. It was a slow process and I had a lot of time to reflect on my life and the world around me. It changed me. For the better.

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@essieness omg. how did you almost die? Is it true that you really see your life flash before your eyes?

essieness's avatar

@Tenpinmaster It turns out I have Addison’s disease but had no idea. I was in full blown adrenal crisis (meaning my body was shutting down) when I found out. I lost 40 lbs in about 5 months and was to a point where I couldn’t even perform the basic functions of life, such as bathing, eating, and so on.My mother finally took me to the doctor and when he took my blood pressure, it was 50/40 and he admitted me to the hospital. I had known I was dying for quite some time, but didn’t know what was wrong with me or how to fix it. It was scary and a relief at the same time. My dad had died a year prior, so in my mind, I was ok with going Home to be with him. I had started to think about things like, “What will my family do about my apartment, furniture, car, bills, etc.” I was ready to give my mom access to my bank account in case it needed to be shut down. The process of death was slow (it was about 8 months from the time I started feeling “off” to the time of diagnosis, so I had much time to reflect).

Anyway, after 2 days in the hospital, I had my diagnosis and with some medication, I was back to normal. It was an amazing, life changing experience. I am a completely different person now in so many ways.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

@essieness good for you. Good for us. Thanks for sharing that.

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@essieness wow. yes, thank you for sharing that. I am glad that you are doing better. :) You are a trooper.

essieness's avatar

Aw thanks :) I didn’t mean to hijack your thread…

@Tenpinmaster I also was married a few years ago and had a similar experience to the one you described in your question. I tried to make it work for a while, but my gut was right, just like yours probably is. Go with your intuition. Be happy. Don’t waste any time in an unhappy situation. I wish you luck and send you happy thoughts.

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@essieness lol! no worries. I’m just glad everything is good! I’m also glad you realized that you live in a finite existence and to be try and be happy.

I’ve been an agnostic all my life but I am reconsidering some greater mystery right now. I had a recent accident which involved a blackout and an acquaintance and her mother were praying as to where to find me. The mother called the daughter and told her god had said where to look and that’s where I was found. I owe that girl, her mother and their god my life.

Tenpinmaster's avatar

@lynneblundell I agree! double wow. That is something that is definatly beyond explanation but very incredible.
