I’m having some wi-fi problems with my iPod Touch. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?

I bought myself a brand new, 3rd generation iPod Touch for Christmas and up to now it has been working fine, lately, however, I have been having a lot of trouble getting it to connect to or with and/or recognize a wi-fi signal. It used to be o.k. but lately, even if my wi-fi finder app indicates that there is a strong signal the iPod won’t connect. At my motel the other night, my laptop had no trouble connecting. The motel’s wi-fi signal was strong and solid enough that I could watch streaming television off ABC’s website on my laptop, but my iPod wouldn’t connect. Is there some setting that I unset or that should be set or what? It was working fine at first, now, not so well.
