Single-payer systems and homogenous cultures

Asked by squirbel (4297points) March 4th, 2008 from iPhone

One of the arguments against a single-payer system for health and education in the US is that it will never work because of racial diversity. “People would be more open to it if they knew they were taking care of their own; that is why it works for places such as the Netherlands.”

How do you feel? What would enable you to accept a single-payer system?

I just found this page detailing single payer systems… Can we assume this is the type of system you are referring to?

That is correct.

People are opposed to it because of race?!? That’s the most pathetic thing I’ve heard. You are all American, right? And human, right? Done and done. From someone that lives in a mulicultural society with universal healthcare, I can tell you that I never once considered or cared the races of the people being covered.

I think in the US these days it’s more about citizen vs illegal immigrant. I think illegal aliens should be covered but there are many who hate the fact that they would recieve healthcare off our dollar. This country is so dam uptight about immigrants it’s like they’re humans just like we are. Give them everything we have including healthcare.

@qualitycontrol—The issue isn’t that immigrants would receive health care. The issue is that illegal immigrants would receive health care without paying taxes. It is fiscally irresponsible.

To answer the question, it would depend on who the single payer is. I tend to shy away from ideas that limit consumer choice and competition, especially in America which has traditionally been capitalist. I think that government sponsored health care is a really bad idea, not to mention unconstitutional.

There is a problem I’ve noticds with people arguments when ever they bring up the issue of illegal immigrants using government services they don’t pay into. I think the majority of Americans don’t realize how many illegal immigrants pay into our tax system. That the INS and IRS are two entities that have little communication with eachother. There are illegal immigrants paying taxes under not only one SSN but two or more.

Receiving hospital services payed by the government isn’t “them” stealing money from “us” but us stealing money from them. Because when it comes down to it most illegal immigrants are scared to use services they have payed into because they are scared of being caught. But your average american doesn’t think twice about how much immigrant pay is being put right back into the system that the legal Americans are taking advantage of.

thank you very much for citing sorces, and I will do so if I can find sorces of my own, but I would venture to guess that illegal immigrants put much more of that right back into our economy. This country is now dependent on an illegal labor force. But I will wait to post again till I have statistics of my own to back up my claim.
