Does having a "I support the police" sticker on your car (of various kinds) help during a traffic stop?

Asked by shilolo (18075points) February 25th, 2010

Sometimes you see people with a PAL (police athletic league) or X Location Police Officers Association sticker on their window or bumper. I assume they paid some sort of fee to the organization, and in return got the sticker. Now, I’m sure many people feel a strong motivation to support the local police. However, I wonder if an ulterior motive is to directly show their support to a police officer. Does having one of these stickers “help”? Has anyone ever been given favorable treatment on this basis?

I’m sure some policemen will feel flattered. Whether they give you a rebate on your speeding ticket I’m not so sure.

Ha, here in NYC, they’d think I was being sarcastic and they’d be right.

My cop friend recently said he doesn’t give those guys breaks, but I think he mostly does detective work.

I know you will get a ticket instead of a warning if you point it out!

It’s all relative. If you have a local sticker and got pulled over by a local cop, then it may be recognized. However, out-of-state or non-local stickers are more likely ignored than noticed. . . and as @cruiser noted, do not point it out.

Well, like others said it doesn’t hurt but just having a sticker doesn’t mean much. But my experience is I had that sticker on my car and the cop asked me if my dad was a cop or something and I told him well actually hes been retired for awhile but hes the president of the FOP lodge up in Toledo. The cop then explained to me that I was speeding and after running my info my license apparently was also suspended for an unpaid speeding ticket. Anyways after a short convo about that he told me if the girl I was with could drive and he let her drive the car away without ticketing me for anything. Thank god because the suspension laws in ohio make it a bitch to correct.
Anyways I guess being the son and nephew and cousin of a few cops has a little more sway than just donating a few bucks for a sticker.

I know people who think those stickers (which around here you get for donating a certain amount of money) will help them avoid a ticket. I had a boss once who had some kind of sticker on his license plate which was given to him by his son, a police officer. He said he’s blown by cruisers on the highway going over 80 mph, and if they pull out to pull him over, they stop once they see that particular sticker. I don’t know how much truth there is to that, however. That guy was kind of an asshole.

My husband’s cousin is a cop, and each year he give us these “Silver Shield Association” cards with his name and badge number. He said if we get pulled over, we should hand that card to the officer with the driver’s license saying, “My cousin is on the job.” In all the years I’ve had my “get out of jail free card” I’ve never used it. My husband has, and he said sometimes he gets attitude for it, but he hasn’t gotten any tickets. Maybe having a cop in your family holds more sway than making a donation.

In any case, I don’t think it’s foolproof, and I’m sure there are limits to any kind of professional courtesy having a card or sticker like that will bring you.

Many times it’s the difference between a ticket and a warning.

Okay, you have waited for my answer, so here goes: The Fraternal Order of Police is very big in my state. as a matter of fact. the National Headquarters for the FOP is in Nashville, Tn. does having a an FOP sticker or its equvilant have a bearing on a police officers decision? Never on a criminal stop or outstanding warrants, BUT, a traffic stop for a minor violation is a different story. and, to be honest, yes, it does have a bearing on police officers. officers look at this, this way: we need all the support we can muster and if means letting some people go with “just a warning”, then so be it. its up to the individulal officer to make this decision. would i believe a FOP or other support your police sticker help to receive just a warning…...yes. i have never made this statement before, but since i am retired…......who cares? yes, the stickers do make a difference.

@TILA_ABs_NoMore You can donate money to the FOP and they will send you a sticker

It certainly can’t hurt.

I guess so. It’s flattering for them to see that sticker in your car so maybe if it is just about minor violations It make them have you some favor.
