I have a question about levels of consciousness regarding wake and sleep states?

Asked by Just_Justine (6511points) February 25th, 2010

I do recall whilst studying Psychology that a lot of emphasis was placed on levels of wake and sleep consciousness and now I realize for good reason. The reason I ask is personal and I am obviously questioning if this is normal. I can wake up at certain times in the night and see “red lights” around the room. Or luminous shapes. It must last up to maximum 30 seconds I blink then it goes away. The other night I woke up and did not see these things but heard “shouting” in the corner of the room. Have I woken and am in a wake dream state? I am aware I am awake. Or would you term this psychotic?

it sounds like typical hypnagogic experiences. most people don’t experience this but some do. I have from time to time.

also, you don’t have to capitalize “psychology”. it doesn’t need capitalization.

This is obviously very similar to sleep paralysis, which I’ve experienced on occasion. Usually I’ll still be within a dreamlike state while I am still consciously perceiving the outside world. This can really mess with your mind as it is an almost hallucinatory state. My girlfriend often tells me that she sees weird things while waking up in the mornings, such as floating objects or people in the room. When she becomes fully conscious these things disappear. For a long time she was convinced that these were signs of ghosts.

The hypnagogic state is weird indeed. When I was in my 20s I frequently experienced sleep paralysis during waking, associated with a loud hissing sound, but I seem to have outgrown it. Hypnagogia is believed to be the basis of alien abductions & other strange phenomena reported by otherwise sober-minded individuals. It is not abnormal & should not be cause for alarm.

Perhaps it’s a type of lucid dreaming you’re experiencing.

Not at all psychotic,
...,maybe experiencing higher levels of your awareness.
when in the dream state and you are awake and in control of the direction of your experience….,is very powerful is it not?
But sometimes we become blown around like the wind moving thoughts and desires into all kinds of fantastic scenarios….,
But you seem to stay in focus, as more is revealed to you, so you are seeing your colors moving and are seeing clarity instead of fantasy projections of your mind.
it’s a world of thought we live in, get beyond the framework of your thought structure, and levels of clarity open up. as in your astral plane adventures.
...In your dream awareness, Stay centered in your breath for purity of light and sound.

I was once told that dream-like activity can contaminate the real world (opinion of an MD when I was a boy).

If it persists I might bring it up with your MD – in the very least it is interesting.
