Wii will not read discs, any ideas?

Asked by Axemusica (9500points) February 27th, 2010

I remember seeing a thread about this before, but I must not know how to navigate fluther’s search engine correctly or something.

Anyways, the wii will turn on and you can play games that don’t need discs and what not, but as soon as you put a disc in it makes a sound like it’s trying hard to read it, but then doesn’t. It then says the disc is unreadable and the wii needs to be reset.

I’ve heard this is a common problem, but is there a way to fix it? My brother (the wii’s owner) was just thinking about buying another, but I’m sure there’s probably a cheaper way of going about it.

My daughter’s does that every time she puts the disk in backwards.

Take it to a local store that offers Wii repair, or simply make sure you are putting it in shiny side to larger part.

Ok, I know that I would have tried both directions to make sure, but I had to ask my brother. I never play the thing. I got a Xbox 360 that I elected to be the family console and a PS3 in my room. He says he’s tried both ways. Would putting it in upside down cause a problem? I just don’t know anything about wii’s and I don’t want him to have to buy another.

@ChaosCross any idea how much that would run? Also, I somehow doubt there would be place here in Anchorage that could repair one, or at least qualified to do so.

~Edit~ just in case I didn’t make it clear. Both directions of the disc do not work.

I asked that question awhile back.

The consensus was that the wii has problems sometimes and is stupid, and can be fixes by Nintendo I believe.

@Axemusica How in the hell do you put in a disk upside down if you’ve already tried “both ways”??

And also, Isn’t Anchorage a major Alaskan city? GameStops and such do that kind of repair work. You could also mail it to the Wii people if they offer that kind of service.

@Fred931 ”@Axemusica How in the hell do you put in a disk upside down if you’ve already tried “both ways”??” What? There’s only one side of the disc that works, the other side would be upside down. Also, has gamestop always done console repairs? This is the first time I’ve heard of it. Every time I’ve been in a gamestop talking about repairs, I’ve heard them say they will ship it to the company (e.g. sony, M$, Nintendo) for the custumer, but not actually repairing it themselves. Alaska is a very expensive place to ship things to and from. Would shipping it to and from Nintendo be cheaper than buying a new one considering a new one is what $200?

@Axemusica I had already assumed that somebody had tried puting in the disk both ways and had then suggested putting it in upside-down, which made hardly any sense to me.

Axemusica's avatar

@Fred931 ohhh, no. The suggestion was made that it was being put in upside down, then I mentioned it has been tried both ways. yea, I thought the suggestion (like it hadn’t already been tried) was kind of an insult. Like say,“is it plugged in?” although, some people are that oblivious, I guess I just should’ve mentioned before hand, that it has been tried.

Have you tried out a GCN game on it? Do that, and if it still doesn’t work then it is most likely your laser. Nintendo can replace it for about $70.

By the way, what games have you tried in it?

Axemusica's avatar

@ShiningToast I don’t think they have any GC discs. I know they’ve tried Wii Sports and Cars(Pixars). Does the owner have to pay for shipping to Nintendo?

ShiningToast's avatar

@Axemusica I actually have no idea. I’d call them up at 1–800-255–3700 and see what they tell you. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Also, click This; it confirms that if the disks are not accepted then the console needs to be sent in.

One final thing: GO HERE to do some “start repair” thing that they have. Sorry i’m throwing all these at you like this, but that’s how I fix problems… throw a hammer at it and cover it with duct tape.

Fred931's avatar

@ShiningToast See how well the duct-tape-and-hammer technique works for me?

I’ve found that if I tilt my wii to the left (from upright) sometimes the lever that comes across to engage the disc clicks into place. I don’t know why it gets jammed, but sometimes it does. try that. If you don’t use a fan/remote charging station or anything like that, just keep it on its side.
